I'm a colossal idiot. Garbage disposal problem.

I have no idea where to post this but I'm hoping someone might have a suggestion. I poured beans that had only soaked (not cooked) down our garbage disposal and they apparently weren't soft enough to dispose of that way.  Now our garbage disposal is backed up.  My DH is telling me to disconnect the pipe below the sink and clean it out but I can't get it unhooked.  I was thinking maybe I could pour boiling water down the drain to hopefully soften the beans...is that going to create more problems? Help! Like I said I'm a colossal idiot, I know.

  • next time stuff like that goes down the toilet not in the sink or drain the water off and put the beans in the trash.  But for now i would unplug the disposal and try to fish some of it out with a spoon.  then if I could I would wait for DH to get home because he is right the trap needs cleaned out.

  • Oh, no no, don't flush food down the toilet.  That reminds me of the time I had someone else's chinese food come out of my toilet when I still lived in my apartment.  So not good.

They do make garbage disposal cleaner (you can buy it at Target), but I don't know how effective it is at removing clogs.  You probably need to physically unclog it and then get some of that stuff to clean anything that's left.  I use one of the little packets maybe once a year if I notice any kind of lingering smell from the disposal.

  • Just stick your hand down there.  It's yucky, and it always makes me nervous (b/c I'm always afraid that it will just magically start running) but just get the stuff out of there.  I one time accidentally dumped gravel down there and had to fish it all out.

This. If you have a rubber thing in the drain that prevents splashing, pull it out so you can see better. It's not super sharp down in the disposal, it's just kind of icky.

  • Wet/Dry vac to suck everything out.

Does your disposal have a manual turn on the bottom? you can try turning it that way so you don't burn out the motor, you may need to find a wrench.

I am so nervous about putting hands down the disposal - I'd use the wet dry vac or a soup ladle and start scooping!

I did the same thing with mussel shells.  What a mistake!

  • Really you should never put food chunks down your disposal. One for the clogging issues, and two because all that debris goes into the water and has to be filtered out which causes more of a drain on the overall water system for your city. Or worse goes right into a river or other water source.

At most it should be for rinsing off after you scrap into the trash.

You should never put potato peels or egg shells down there either.
