Question for all the e-reader owners

Were you all resistant at all before getting one?  I know both DH and I love to read, but we love holding a book and turning pages.  Plus, for me, I sit at a computer all day, there's just something about looking at paper instead of a screen.

What were your thoughts before you got it, and what are your thoughts now?

Re: Question for all the e-reader owners

  • I was totally resistant, I had been thinking about getting a kindle for a while but was afraid I would miss feeling a real book.  Then I started to realize I wasn't reading as much because it was uncomfortable to lay in bed with a big hardcover book and if I needed a flashlight it was worse.  JT would complain when I read.

I was wrong,  I wish I had gotten a kindle sooner.  I got the leather case with the light and it feels just like a regular book and the e-ink is easy on the eyes and like reading a regular page.  I wanted something easy on eyes since I stare at a computer screen all day.

I only read 2 books last year and now I've read 18!  Now I don't want to read regular books.  My dad was the same way as me about a kindle and then he heard me raving about mine and got one a month ago and he loves it.

  • I love everything about paper books.  Their size, the smell, the feeling of the pages in my hand, how I get totally absorbed in them. I was completely resistant to getting one.

Then I had P and I was carrying around so much stuff. B got me the kindle for mother's day last year, and I love it.  It takes up no space in the diaper bag or my work bag.  The screen is nothing like looking at a computer screen to me.  It is much easier to read in bed because it is so light. And, when my eyes get tired, I can increase the font!  It is easier to pack for a week's vacation, although I still take regular books from the library, too.  It doesn't completely substitute for regular books, there's a place in my life for both.

I used to commute by public transportation and by foot, and I always had a book.  I really wish I had had one then.

  • I'm not a big book reader (lack of time), but I love magazines. I bought a Nook Color and I couldn't be more pleased. I can read it in bed and it doesn't strain my eyes, and I love that I can read my magazines as well.

I've read 4 books in the last 6 weeks and I don't think I read that many in the last year!

I was very hesitant about ereaders. I can get paperback books cheaper on Amazon.com or Half.com than buying an ebook. I researched all the different ereaders a few months ago. My first choice was Kindle because of the screen but it had limited download capabilities meaning it doesn't support some book formats. I gave up. Then last week I realized I've been reading books on my little phone so why not just get an ereader. I was considering the Nook color but I nixed that because of the screen. My eyes strain with those screens and I look at one all day long at work. I settled on a Kindle. I did some research and found ways to convert the ebook books I already had on my phone to Kindle's format. I am so happy I chose to buy an ereader. I love reading and now it's even easier to do than before. The screen is awesome and doesn't hurt my eyes at all.e

I was super resistant, which is why it took me so long to get one. But, the more I read about them and thought about it, the more I wanted to try it. I love my Nook so far. I spent like 3 hours reading last night and had no eye strain whatsoever. I'm on the computer all day, too, and the e-ink it totally different. It looks like a book. So, if that is an issue, I would stick with the black and white Nook or Kindle (or the other brands). The color one is more like a laptop screen like the iPad.

Go play with them. I think Best Buy sells both, so you could compare. The guy at our Barnes and Noble was super helpful and even brought out his to show us some things.

  • Awesome, thanks for all your feedback everyone!  I'm just so hesitant because of our book love, Becky described it perfectly.

Logan really wants a grill for his birthday, but I'm definitely keeping this in mind for anniversary.  I'll hit up the Best Buy and try out some of the options so I can see the differences.

Between to two main ones, I think that anybody who has either loves it. The big differences, in my opinion, are the lending features from the library. Kindle doesn't currently do it, but I think they are going to soon. They also feel different in your hands, but I liked both. The Kindle has a keyboard while the Nook is a touch screen. Also, the Kindle is about $10 cheaper for the comparable device to the Nook.

I chose Nook because my library supports it, but also because I want to support the brick and mortar book store. It's the only one we have here and I really don't want to see them go out of business.

I know that Sony also has an e-reader, but I don't know much about it.

  • My mom had a kindle for a couple years and I never wanted one. That was until my bookshelves started overflowing and collecting dust. I do not like having a lot of furniture and although I would love a library one day, my allergies simply cannot handle it. I got a kindle for Christmas and it has been the greatest thing ever. I rave about it all the time (if you saw my fb statuses you would believe me!)... I read on the treadmill/elliptical ALL the time b/c you can change the font size. It seriously motivates me to go to the gym so I can get reading time in when I would normally feel guilty for reading a book at home on the couch with all the grading I have to do. I got a $30 gift card for Christmas and I still have money left to spend because everything I have read has been free or borrowed. I seriously cannot say enough great things about my kindle. It is the most amazing thing ever.....

Also... kindle is doing a software updates sometime soon that will allow you to borrow library books. Super excited about that!
