What do you wear to an interview?

Do you own a suit or do you just wear nice pants and a collared shirt??

Re: What do you wear to an interview?

  • depends on the interview/industry

in publishing, i didn't usually wear a suit because it was a more casual industry. i would often do a cashmere sweater and nice skirt or a dress. ditto when i interviewed at the political marketing firm last summer. in that case, one of my interviewers was wearing shorts, i'd have felt overdressed in a suit.

for other industries, i usually do a suit or at least suit pants and a blouse and blazer (if not my suit jacket).

  • I'm an attorney so for any firm or company I wear a suit; for meeting with headhunters and such I usually wear dress pants and a nice top (either blouse or usually more sweater type thing for me b/c I hate blouses).

  • Ditto the others, depends on what the industry is.  When I went for interviews to be a teacher I wore slacks and a nice dressy sweater set.  When I interviewed for admin / executive positions I wore a suit and heels.
  • In my industry, I wear suits only. But I agree with everyone else that it totally depends on the job and the field.

  • I do want to add - I think it is really important to over dress versus under dress however!  Better to be in a suit that is not needed versus a more casual outfit that might happen to be slightly frowned upon.  Never hurts to look *too* professional  :)
  • when in doubt, suit up

This. I'd rather be overdressed than underdressed. You can always take the jacket off if you think you are too formal.
