Link to video news story about incident
Cliff
notes version of the story: Student and friends taped paper letters to
the side of the high school building asking a girl to the prom. The
students were suspended for a day, and are no longer allowed to go to
the prom. What do you think?
The seniors are now organizing their own prom.

Re: CT student banned from prom...WDYT? (clicky poll)
Ok I watched the video and yes, he was technically trespassing so suspend him for a day, give his friends detention for a day or two but c'mon. This is ridiculous. He has apologized, he was so careful to use cardboard letters, nothing permanent.
Ridiculous to ban him from prom. Yes there need to be consequences and they suspended him, isn't that enough? Does every kid who gets caught spray painting get banned from prom? B/c that's worse than this.

I did not watch the video, but read an article about this earlier today.
While I do think being banned from prom is a bit much, he's being banned b/c the school has a policy that says if you're suspended any time after 4/1 of the given school year, you forfeit your opportunity to go to prom, so I stand by the school's decision. I'm SURE every student in that school knows that is the school policy. He could have asked her a week earlier and not been in the situation that he's in.
This. It is very sucky and seems overreactive, YES. But the school has a policy in place for a reason. And if one kid gets away with it then it opens the door for other problems down the road with other kids suspended for seemingly innocent things.
ITA with this. I don't think he deserved to be suspended for something so benign in the first place. FWIW, I think what he did was a really sweet way to ask her to prom.

And I agree with this..BUT..I think the punishment was a bit over the top for what he did. He shouldn't have been suspended, thereby not falling into this category.
Schools are almost being too harsh lately, like they're trying to make examples of good kids.
In a school nearby to me a kid was suspended because he showed up to school on horseback. Now, you should know, the town is a HUGE equestrian town. It's very hoity toity and there are like 2 golf courses and about 50 horse farms and a very well known polo club. Very upscale. It was school spirit day and the kid dressed up like General Patton (Patton is from this town and they're VERY proud of it) and rode into school. He was suspended. Eh???
So what policy did he violate by arriving at school on a horse???? I agree, it's ridiculous these days what kids get suspended for. I guess that's my thing - this kid broke a rule but not a suspension-worthy rule I guess if that's what makes him barred from prom.
