mattress shopping

Where should we look for a new mattress?  We just need the mattress, since we can't fit a queen boxspring up our stairs and already bought a platform bed instead of a split boxspring.  Also, what kind of mattress do you have and do you like it?  Lastly, is there a certain time of year when there tend to be good sales?  Thanks.

Re: mattress shopping

  • This will be my billionth and one recommendation for Tempur-Pedic on TheNest :)  DH and I have had our bed for almost 5 years now and still love it.  It's definitely a splurge, but you can't put a price on good sleep.

Some people feel there's an adjustment period to get used to sleeping on memory foam.  DH and I had no issues at all and loved it from Day 1.  We bought from Brookstone and they do offer a 90-day, cash-back, satisfaction guarantee.  So you have plenty of time to try it in-home and if you don't like it they'll give you your money back--not store credit, cash back.  I don't think any mattress stores do this.

TPs pretty much never go on sale.  There are sometimes special promos on the pillows like BOGO, but I don't think I've ever seen the mattresses on sale.  Also, the company controls the pricing so every retailer should be charging the same amount.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Thanks Rock.  We actually have memory foam pillows already (not sure if they are TempurPedic or a generic brand) and love them.  That's great to know that they have a 90 day trial period.  I'll have to look into this more.

I bought my pillow top mattress at Jordan's furniture in 2004. I love it. It still feels brand new. I don't think they have sales though.

  • We had a great experience at Jordan's.  And they have a really good selection

  • Thanks.  I was worried about Jordan's being expensive but since they don't do gimmick sales we might be better off in the end going with them.  I hate figuring out how to game a pricing system at a store to get the best deal, especially with a big purchase when it can make a signifcant difference.
  • We also bought outs at Jordans, and of the furniture stores in the area, I never feel pressured or stalked whenever I walk in there to look around.

Like Rock, we have a tempur-pedic... or rather, Jordan's version.  Slightly less expensive, but still all of the awesome.  Love it.
