Random: Name Related

I die a little inside (ok not "die", but I'm a little disappointed) when I see one of the names we like mentioned on the BN Bump board, or when I hear it in conversation.  Why do I have to like a name that's growing significanly in popularity?! Ack!

  • We run into more and more Willa's these days.  Think of yourself as a trendsetter.

  • Awww - it's okay if a name is popular!  When my BFF was picking a name, one of the ones they were choosing between was (is) super popular.  I told her if she loves that name, use it no matter what.  Her H's name is Michael and we were with Andy at the time and I asked both of them if their lives sucked because they have popular names.  They both didn't seem to mind and turned out just fine. :-)
  • I was the exact same way with Hudson's name.  It grows in popularity every year but I know I can't control that.  As long as it doesn't get into the top 10, I'm fine.  Have you checked out the social security 2010 most popular names that just came out on Sunday?  Are they very popular nationwide and growing significantly in popularity?  That's the best way to tell.  GL!  Just go with the name you love most!

  • If you like it you like it.  I understand wanting something unique but you are probably reading a national board and who knows if the name has permeated in our area right?  Plus, speaking from experience, once she is here, the name's popularity is going to fall to the bottom of your concern list and it will seem to "fit" once she is here so you'll never even second guess it.  I say go with it!  And now I'm dying to know the name (so I can tell all of my pg friends to use it - muwhahaha!  J/K).  I do want to know it.

Oh yes, I've checked out the new list :-)  Nationally it's in the top 150 and it jumped 8 spots since last year.  It hasn't made it to the top 100 in Michigan though.

I'm being ridiculous about the whole thing, I know.  Stick out tongue  The other 3 names we like are either very high up on the list or haven't been rated in the top 1000 in at least 20 years.  I just really wanted a non-trendy name for our little girl.

    Hehe.  This made me laugh.

I think if you like the name, go for it.  What's the worst that can happen if there's another girl in her class named Reese?

  • Also think of it this way....there WAY more names being used nowawdays than before, so even with a popular name, its not like there are going to be 4-5 kids with that name in the kids class. Before, when a name was popular, it was popular, like Heather, etc.

  • I love Reese!  DS is in a large daycare and I don't think there are any little girls named Reese.  I love unique names, too, so don't worry if they haven't been popular in the past 20 years.  As long as it doesn't sound made up, you are good!

Yeah, when we started talking names, we originally wanted something uncommon, but not made up.  We actually like that two of our other names haven't been used in a long time.  Renee is another name on our list, and it's been high on the SSA list for quite a while (like in the 700-800's).  Magdalen (Maggie) hasn't been on the SSA list since the 40's I think.

  • It's funny that you mention Renee, because *dork alert* I was listening to Morning Edition and they brought up the baby names list that was just released and the two announcers brought up the popularity of their names:

INSKEEP: Renee, it turns out that you and I have rare names, at least for the moment.

    MONTAGNE: Wow.

INSKEEP: Renee is the 871st most popular name on the list.

    MONTAGNE: And yours?

INSKEEP: And Steven came in at 118. both names have been losing a little bit of steam over the past decade.

When they mentioned it I though "hmmm, Renee is pretty - I really like that for a girl!"  And then 4 hours later I read this post. :-)
