I'm allergic to my house!

DH and I have been doing some remodeling that left saw dust and exposed drywall hanging around here for awhile, so I thought my symptoms were due to that. Well dust is now all cleaned up and drywall is primed and painted and I still have these sneezing attacks and wake up each morning with congestion, so it must be something else that I'm allergic to. It clears up when I leave the house so it's not because of high pollen count or anything. Anyone have any suggestions?? I don't want to be a victim in my own home lol

Re: I'm allergic to my house!

  • Any possibilities of mold in the house? Did previous owners have pets that might have left fur/etc. in the vents or carpets?

Do you have the reaction everywhere in your house? Or just wake up that way after sleeping?

All I can think of to try, if you have no idea what it is, is an air purifier.

  • I am with pp try the air purifier.

Also have you gotten any new cleaning supplies like a new brand or scent? or even a new candle?

  • It's possible there is still dust lingering, even though the actual construction is complete.  Also, I second Kari's theory that there may be mold that might have been exposed/stirred up by the construction - I am EXTREMELY allergic to mold.

As far as suggestions, air purifier is a good one.  For my allergies, the best OTC remedy is Claritin.  I'd probably stock up on that if I were you.

  • Ooh, I'd bet on mold too. Clean out your furnace filters - that's something that helped us a lot.
  • Thanks ladies. I'm going to try the air purifier. There haven't been any signs of mold (DH's dad was here and he inspects homes for a living so I think he would've found something) but maybe it could be pet hair somewhere. We vacuumed but I am allergic to cats so if there's any floating around I'm sure that could be a problem!

I'm totally allergic to our house too, especially when we're in the throws of a project.

I totally agree with kaesha, clean/replace your furnace filter and consider getting your ducts cleaned too.  Chances are there's a lot of dust kicking around in places you just can't see.

If you are allergic you might consider having your carpets professionally cleaned. Obviously they should have been cleaned whenyou bought, but this would give you peice of mind. Also cat fur is super fine and I would recommend checking the vents/ducts too.
