ebates.com - can someone explain this to me?

I did a quick search on it to see what all the hype is about.. but I'd like a quick lesson of it's advantages.

Re: ebates.com - can someone explain this to me?

  • When you are making an online purchase you can go through ebates.com and just by clicking on the link to the retailer from the ebates website, you will get the percentage shown back. Meaning if you spent $30, you would get $1.50 back from ebates just by shopping through their website. You have to be a member and I think they have certain time periods that they will send you a check or through paypal the money you have saved by shopping through them. Hope that helps.
  • Say you were going to place an order at drugstore.com or gap.com or sephora.com  today.  Those stores are offering 12% cash back right now.  Wouldn't it be better to get 12% cash back from your purchase than to get 0% cash back?  (Note: ebates can be used with coupon codes, so it isn't like you have to pick one or the other.)

I've been a member forever (since 1999), but I've gotten over $1400 in ebates to date.  That's what the hype is all about.  Tons of stores are on there, and some have high percentages of cash back, so it can really add up if you shop online often.  There's no real downside because it is free and easy.

    Checks come once a quarter.

  • Ok.. so it's not a percentage off while online shopping, it's actual cash back that is sent to you quarterly?

I did sign up based on seeing a lot of stores I do use, but before I jumped in I wanted a quick run-down of what the real upside is.

  • Oops. What I was trying to say earlier in my example was lets say you are making a $30 purchase from Target.com and ebates offers a 5% cash back. You will get $1.50 back from shopping through ebates. And ebates shows you all the current coupons for different stores too, so it can save you a lot of money just by shopping through them.
  • What is this website about?
  • It's great, BBB accredited, free, and really simple to use!!  Wow, the previous poster's $1400 in cash back to date is awesome!  I've only been using it about 2 yrs now, but I love it too.  There are many popular retailers that are Ebates partners.  I regularly use Ebates to shop Ebay, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Sephora, Vera Bradley, Sears, Shutterfly just to name a few.  The previous poster is right, instead of going to an ebates partner website directly first, go to Ebates.com and make sure you're signed in.  Find the store you want to shop in their partner stores list and click on the link to their website.  It will open a "tracking ticket" that Ebates uses to make a record if and when you end up making a purchase after visiting a partner retailer's site.

So instead of typing the website in yourself or clicking on the link to the retailer's page in a search engine, just go through Ebates.com first.  After you make your purchases, a few days later you will receive an email with a cash back update.  You get to see your cash back history including past checks you've earned, as well as current cash pending.  If you notice a transaction hasn't shown up after a while, all you have to do is send them an email and they will investigate.  Usually you will almost instantly see the cash back in question credited to your account once you've worked with a customer service rep. to resolve possible missing cash back.

I placed an order for 16 photo books for both sides of our family for Christmas 2 yrs. ago.  It was my first experience with Ebates, and my best so far!  They were offering 10% cash back at Kodak Gallery.com.  I had never made photo books before either.  I also found a Valpak.com coupon code for 50% off photo books at Kodak Gallery.com.  Soo, I received beautiful photo books for us and our families for 50% off, plus 10% cash back from Ebates!  That rocked!  I just checked my history, that order was $274.03 so I got $27.40 cash back from Ebates!  And my order would have been $548.06 without the Valpak coupon code.  Obviously there are no restrictions for combining coupon codes with the use of Ebates.  Ebates is simply the "springboard" site for your transactions with their partner sites.  It's just a starting point which results in a great reward.

  • It's essentially "free" money/rebate for your online purchases like others have said.

There are similar websites, but ebates is the only one I use.  Some online retailers aren't registered with ebates, so you can't use it for everything, but it's a wonderful habit to get into at least trying/looking at before you make any online purchase.

I've only been using it since Dec. 2010 and don't do a ton of online shopping, but in the past 6 months I've gotten back $40, which like uppereast said is better than $0.

Also if you refer friends you get either a giftcard or credit depending on the timing.

Lastly, the rebate percentages change and aren't always the same.  There's always some stores under a promotion for double rebate.

  • Thanks for the crash course, everyone.  As I mentioned, I signed up so I'll just have to get used to going there first to start earning cash back.

    Thanks again!

  • I love ebates! I just signed up in November and I've already gotten $150 cash back.  It's especially great for booking travel since that adds up fast.

Which travel sites do you book through that ebates offers?  I haven't been able to find any of my "usuals" on ebates. TIA

Oh nice, I didn't even think of that.  And that's some nice cash for only 6 months time!
