Announcement & a few questions (pr)

Great news, we found out a few days ago that we're expecting our first child! I'm currently about 4 1/2 weeks, EDD is Jan. 16. (We aren't telling anyone IRL so if you know me please don't say anything.)

I had some spotting last weekend & went in for a blood test to check my beta levels & make sure everything is okay. The spotting was light & sporadic for a few days & stopped on Monday. My first beta was on Tuesday (98) & I should get the second back tomorrow.

Now on to the question. I go to WHS, when I had my annual exam a few weeks ago I asked Dr. H. about exercise during pregnancy. (We work out with a trainer & focus mainly on strength training.) She said to continue as normal until I confirm pregnancy, then monitor my heart rate & continue to work out but not excessively.

When I called for my blood test results I double checked with the nurse about specific exercise restrictions. She said not to lift more than 10-15 lb per Dr. G. When I told my trainer about this he was baffled, he said usually that type of restriction isn't imposed until late in the 2nd trimester. I wrote about this on another board & they said it seems like outdated advice. One person even eluded that I should find a new doctor.

What do you ladies think? Does this sound normal, could it be because of my spotting?

(I'm not upset with the restriction & I am following it, thanks for listening to my rambling.)

Re: Announcement & a few questions (pr)

  • I don't think I'd find a new Dr just because they're being cautious. I'm guessing that because of the bleeding, and also because your second beta isn't back yet to confirm doubling, they're trying to have you take it easy. People on the boards get so worked up about the strangest things. I believe they told me to keep my pulse under 140 which, yes, is outdated but really... it's not going to hurt you. Ya know? :)

WHS caters to regular and also high risk patients so sometimes everyone gets treated like high risk. Honestly if it were me, I'd follow the advice and try not to strain too much at least until you hit the second trimester. I think you're probably in the clear, but how awful would it feel to have worked out really hard and then have something happen. You'd always wonder, "what if..."

    Many congratulations!!! :)

  • Thanks Mrs. Reem. I am following the doctor's advice, I really like WHS, I trust them & have no plans to switch. I agree you, I would rather be cautious. I don't know why people are getting so worked up over being careful.

How are you doing? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! Smile

  • Congrats!!

My thoughts would be to be cautious as well... but then again, I'll use any excuse not to exercise. Smile

  • Congratulations to you! I hope you are feeling well! With B I spotted for about a week and was also told to take it easy and do minimal lifting. I am sure it was just precautionary but I was so nervous while spotting that I took it easy. Then I got sick and couldn't get off the couch even if I tried :) If it were me I would follow the doctor's suggestion at least until you are out of second tri and then go from there. Good luck!

Congratulations!!!   I hope everything continues to go well.
  • In my experience with Dr G, she tends to be cautious and conservative. I don't think that's always a bad thing. There's never any harm in taking it easy :) Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!

  • Congratulations!!

I have been running still, but not at the intensity I was before.  I also haven't been to the doctor yet and I haven't had any issues with spotting.  During pregnancy, you don't want to lift too heavy of weights because it will really bulk you up since there are extra hormones running through your body!  I only use 3-5 lb weights max, but that is also what I do when I'm not pregnant :o)

  • Congrats!!!

I would also just take it easy.  It is good you are so motivated to want to exercise, but with the spotting, I would stick with lower impact, lower weight stuff.  I ran for the first 5 months of my first pregnancy and didn't have  problem, but also, no spotting.  I think your doc is just wanting to be careful (and that is a good thing with pregnancy!!!).

Congrats again to you and your DH!

  • 1st- YAY! Congratulations!! That's great news!!

2nd- I'd tend to play it on the safe side, just until you can get things confirmed. I'm sure you could increase weights as you please later on, what gym do you use a trainer at? He/She should respect your wishes to decrease the weights for now. if not, find a new one of those- they're easier to find than a good doctor!

We go to Snap Fitness. He did follow the doctor's orders & modified my workout. He was just baffled & asked if there was a reason. I wasn't really comfortable telling him about the spotting so I said I didn't know.

Thanks Molly, I'm feeling pretty good, I'm starting to have some symptoms: bloating, tired, acid reflux & nausea.  I've also been waking up 1-2 hours before my alarm which is strange, but I'm taking advantage & enjoying the early morning "me time".

You are all so sweet, thanks for all of the well wishes & reassurance that my doctor knows best! I'm excited that I'll be able to join the play groups next year! Big Smile
