It's not the nausea, cramps, exhaustion or not being able to drink beer/wine...it's trying to stay away from things like bacon and cold cuts! I never realized how much I love that stuff until now. I'm craving bacon ALL the time and sandwiches too! I'm a horrible mom because I have gotten a few sandwiches/wraps at Bagel Mainia and I just had a breakfast sandwich with bacon on it. I'm trying really really hard to keep away from that stuff though! I can't imagine having bacon, deli meat once in a while will be too bad anyways, right?
Oh and soft cheese! We got wings the other night and I had to have them with Ranch dressing *gag* instead of bleu cheese. And I LOVE these spinach, carmelized onion and Goat Cheese Quesadilla things that I make a few times a month, but I can't eat those anymore either. ![]()
Re: The toughest thing about pregnancy so far
That's what I was thinking. It's not like I'm eating bacon every day (I wish!). I've probably had it like twice in my 2 months of pregnancy.

Cooked bacon is off limits?? I didn't start eating bacon until after pregnancy.
And yeah...as long as you aren't eating it every day...I think you are OK.
I think I waited until late 2nd trimester and then ate soft cheeses and deli turkey in moderation.
yeah, supposedly because of the nitrates that are in it.
Oh, I totally second you on the bacon thing! I've had it twice so far, but once camping season rolls around I think it will be harder to resist. I'd prefer to have it once a day.
Is the no deli meats a new thing? The reason I ask is becuase I just thought I wasn't supposed to have it, read I wasn't supposed to, my doctor told me I wasn't supposed to... then one day at a work event a co-worker asked me why I wasn't eating lunch (they provided turkey sandwiches for lunch and turkey wraps for dinner for us "workers", how freaking generous) and she looked at me like I was crazy when I said I wasn't eating it b/c of being pregnant. All of the older woman in my office and my mom & MIL all think I'm crazy.
My doctor told me no sausage either.
FWIW, she also said that as long as I'm not doing crack, then I'm probably doing all the right things for my baby. Joking of course, but we had just gotten done talking about my recent adversion to vegetables.
It never occurred to me to give up bacon or sausage (and I eat a LOT of sausage of various varieties)...oops. Ah well, my kids are fine and Owen has a healthy appreciation for tasty bacon.
When my sister was pregnant, she told me that you can drink a glass of orange juice to offset the nitrates if you just HAVE to have a hot dog/deli meat/etc...
I agree with everyone else. I'm pretty sure when my mom was pregnant nobody was cutting out all of this stuff. So far as I know she didn't stop eating bacon or anything and I turned out normal, minus the deep and abiding love for bacon.
The meats and cheeses were the hardest for me to stay away from, too. I did not eat any deli meats once I found out I was pregnant, but I did still enjoy the occasional breakfast with bacon or sausage. My husband is from Wisconsin so, yes, I ate brats while watching the Packers during football season. Moderation, definitely moderation.
And once that baby was out...I think I ate deli sandwiches every day for a month. I'm over it now.

I love that author, she is just so sensible. People get all freaked out over the dumbest stuff, and honestly, The Bump is like a cesspool of pregnancy myths that people believe simply because they read it on a site about pregnancy, so it MUST be true!!!!
Anyway, rant over. Carry on with enjoying your soft cheeses
Agreed! That's a great article. I was especially glad to see that sushi is not going to magically harm my future hypothetical fetus. And you can bet I won't be giving up coffee 100%. Oh and feta cheese. I really can't imagine a salad life without feta cheese.
I don't think it's necessarily bad to freak out over wanting to do the right thing while pregnant, but I see what you're saying. I'm definitely going to try my best because if I have a child born with a disability or birth defect, I'm always going to wonder if it was because of my actions during pregnancy. So I can see why people freak out over stuff I guess.
Good article... I guess I'm pretty much doing what the author is doing anyways. I am taking things into moderation which I am sure is fine (not drinking though...all set with that during pregnancy). It's the "moderation" part with the food that is tough though!
