Car Question...

So I am in the market for a new car soon and need some suggestions! I have always had SUV's and I love cars that get horrible gas mileage! Not so good with the gas prices today!

My DH and I are planning on having a baby very soon and I have 2 step daughters. So we need a car that will fit at least 5 but preferably 6 that doesnt get bad gas mileage and doesnt cost an arm and a leg. We dont want brand new, probably a 2006-2008ish. It can either be a car or smaller SUV... Any sugestions would be great!!!

  • My sister and her family own one and lease one, this works well for them. I think they own a Suburban which they purchased used.
  • I love my Nissan Murano with keyless entry, automatic lift gate, bluetooth, & great cargo space. Does everything my old Lexus RX 350 did for less $$. Decent gas mileage also.  The Rogue is the smaller version.

Otherwise, look at the Honda CRV for good gas mileage.  Seriously, I think Hyundai is in the market to stay with the best warranty around.

Big gas guzzlers are out of the picture these days although you might find a good buy on them as people are getting smarter.

  • H is planning on buying a Kia Sorrento later this year.  Optional third row seating if we need the extra two seats, but plenty of space for people and toting the dog and groceries and whatever, without being a huge gas hog or too big for a normal parking space.  I have a Subaru Outback that I swear by.  It's full-time AWD, but I still average about 27 mpg, and I moved my entire first apartment in just that car (over many trips, of course).  It's a super solid car - six years old, 120k miles on it (I used to commute almost two hours a day round trip when I first got it) and I've never had any major problems with it.  Just mainly routine maintenance and replacement of belts and things.  Enough room for us, the kid, the 70 lb dog, and the cat and a trunk full of vacation crap.  Love it!
  • If you're willing to go up to an '09, we're getting a ford flex and I love them!  They have seating for 6 or 7 depending on the model and get 24 miles per gallon freeway which for a vehicle that big is really pretty good.  We're trading in our 01 AWD mountaineer for it and I can't wait to see how our gas fill up costs drop.
  • How old are your SDs and how often do you have them? I have 2 little kids and a 16yo SS. Honestly it was having SS that pushed us over the edge to feeling like we need a minivan because he is adult sized and he is with us every weekend.

If you have 3 little kids close in age I think it"s easier. But in many SUVs 3rd row access is difficult and there comes an age where scrambling over seats. SS also needs plenty of leg room since he's almost 6ft and has a size 12 shoe. So a minivan really suits our needs best and we got a Toyota

But if your SDs are smaller and/or with you less often, I loved the Mazda 5 for having a 3rd row and being so nice and small and car-like. But poor SS looked like a sardine back there.
