I know this is silly since I have a job and I know not everyone does but I'm hoping that my job next year isn't a nightmare. As of right now they have me travelling to the other middle school in the middle of the day! This means I won't have a lunch and will have to go back to the first school after I teach 1 lousy class. Each way is a 15 minute drive (what a waste!) This also means I'll be running around like a chicken with my head cut off because I won't have my prep time since I'll be driving during it.
Keep me in your thoughts as to changing this schedule for next year. I'm still waiting to hear if that class I want to start in the high school gets accepted and I won't know that until after the budget passes. I may be able to start teaching that course next year instead and traveling to the high school is much better (it's a half mile away).
Re: Keep me in your thoughts
That sucks!
Will they pay you for the milage between schools?? I hope so!
I hear ya. I used to ride the city bus for 45 minutes between schools in a VERY bad part of DC. It sucked and I saw many things I never thought I'd see and was in some very scary situations.
It's not ideal and I do hope it changes for you but like you said, you have a job and it is good that you are thankful for it!
Update: I talked to the principal today. Basically he said the schedule is as follows
Teach 1,2,3 at X school. End at 10:09. Travel to Y school and start class by 10:41 (their period 4). Then travel back to X school to teach at 12:21 (period 7). 8th period would be off and 9th period would be study hall.
I have multiple problems with this. First, how am I supposed to get from X to Y in that time? I have to make sure all the kids are out of my class, run to the bathroom, get in my car, drive the 15 or so minutes to Y school, park and walk in all in that time? Then afterwards, I have 1 hour to eat my lunch and travel back to X school. One of my planning periods will be spent traveling and part of my lunch will be as well.
When I talked to him about how crazy this is he said it may change but that it wasn't likely and to be happy that I still have a job. There are 8 people with less seniority than me so what he said is a crock of shiot. They would be let go before me. Plus the class at the Y school is a different grade so I'll have 2 preps.
This is their dumbest plan ever! My union is fighting this but they already said that they give me time for lunch and 1 planning period so it's not a contractual issue unfortunately.
We shall see. I talked to my supervisor and asked to schedule a meeting. I have no way of setting anything up for the one class I teach at Y school. I would literally have to do whatever the teacher whose room I'm using is doing. That's a burden on her as well.
UUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
