My fellow grad students and I are planning a post-first-year celebration
to Las Vegas. We've got our plane tickets booked but haven't picked out
a hotel yet. Can anyone recommend a good hotel that's on the strip with
a nice pool that isn't super expensive. Thanks!
Re: Las Vegas Hotels?
Just don't stay at the stratosphere!
I've stayed on many hotels on the stips. My favorites in order are Caesar's Palace, Treasure Island, New York New York, MGM Signature (no casino/smoking), and in last place Excalibur.
you will save a lot of $$ if you go sun-thur. weekends can get crazy expensive, especially if there is an event going on.
i was just there last weekend. we stayed at the monte carlo, which is south of the strip. it's not in the middle, but there is a lot of action in that area. plus with the new city center..that has new hotels- Aria, Crystals, The Cosmopolitan(which make me drool, the decor is AMAZING)
the pool at the monte carlo was pretty cool- wave pool, jacuzzi, lazy river, main pool. we paid $100 a night(fri-sat). Sunday we stayed at The Mirage(also really nice) $80 a night.
I've also stayed at
MGM( $ varies)
The Venetian($139 a night)
The Luxor($40-$80)
NY NY($65-$100)
I recommend going directly to a hotels website and signing up for their email promotion, you'd be surprised how much you save.
Anyway, good luck. I'm sure you'll find a great deal!! Have fun!!!
OH, and if your group is into the nightclub thing you MUST visit XS, it's inside Encore- best nightclub ever! not even kidding

My sister lives in Vegas and we're hoping to visit her soon. Here are my thoughts.
Tropicana has a crazy fun pool and usually isn't too costly.
I think Hard Rock is overrated and not really on the strip.
Mirage, TI and Ceaser's Palace are a good cluster of hotels near shopping and food with fun pools and good prices.
My friends and I just booked at Vdara for this summer. It wasn't too crazy expensive (relatively) and is right in the heart of everything. It's a non-smoking, non-casino hotel so should be a little calmer and less gross. I haven't stayed there yet, but it gets good reviews.
I've only ever stayed at NY/NY (which is on the cheaper side and just fine) and Stratosphere (which is dirt cheap, but far away and kinda blah). I haven't been to Vegas in years.
Have a fun trip!
