When did wedding registries get so expensive?

I am buying shower gifts for two people. Wow! They both registired for the most expensive stuff. A $50 wine glass....one...not a set...one glass. The gravy boat is $130 but wait...pay another $55 for the gravy boat plate and they want two sets!

These are okay friends and $50 is my limit. I guess I should get ONE wine glass, wrap it up and say enjoy! My goodness! I hate giving gift cards at showers. I love searching a registry and finding the item they picked that I connect to. I'm so sad that both registries are way out of my price range.

If I ever have a baby, I am putting the most ridiculous expensive crap that I honestly want on there. I missed the boat on the wedding registry....not going to miss it on the baby! Just kidding...........maybe.....

Took 2 years & 8 months to make our baby! Lilypie First Birthday tickers

I hear you. I also have wondered recently when written thank you notes went out of style-

  • I think sometimes people get a little carried away with expensive stuff since other people are buying. I understand putting good quAlity things on it but, yes a $50 wine glass is a bit much. I would not even want to drink from it.

  • That is insane! I would go with the gift card, even though I don't like to do that either. Stick to your budget! :-)

  • What about a meaningful gift that isnt on the registry - a really nice photo frame, or maybe a gift certificate for the bride to get a pedi or something like that?
  • ORRRRRRR - I loved getting Victorias Secret Gift Cards at my shower - its a way to treat the bride to be, as well as the soon to be husband Cool
  • I hear you!  I always used to put together a hamper or bucket of things for the bride, usually a bunch of small kitchen utensils, or a bathroom basket with towels etc.  Now everyone is asking for $75 hands-free soap dispensers and $350 vacuums!  Which would be fine if there was some smaller stuff on the registry too, but lately people seem to just register for the BIG stuff!

  • I have a cousin getting married for the second time.  Her registry is INSANE!  All the top appliances, Kate Spade dishware that starts at $25 a piece.  It's so over the top.

D - you're a great photographer.  Do you know their homes?  Maybe you can enlarge one of your photos and frame it for a gift.  I had someone do that for me and I loved it, and it still hangs in our family room.

  • $50 wine glasses are ridiculous.  I mean, I can see getting some nice ones (crystal) or something to go with a china set.  We had moderately priced glasses for every day and also wine glasses, and DH ended up breaking so many of them so fast.  LOL.  When I replaced them, I went even cheaper... learned my lesson.  The cheap ones look just as nice, and now if one breaks, I just shrug it off.  I wouldn't waste my guests money by asking them to pay for overpriced stuff like that.
