the great sofa debate

We're looking for a new sofa for our family room. The one we have in there now is awful. Well, at least I think it's awful, but it was Andy's pre-marriage so I have no sentimental attachment. We had planned to put the current sofa in our basement family room (man cave) but it won't fit down the stairs so it ended up on the main floor.

I can't decide if I want a sectional or a matching sofa & loveseat. And I think I want leather, but I've never had a leather sofa before so I'm hesitating.

Anyone have a leather sofa? Do you like it? Is it comfy to lay around on? This is the room we usually hang out in to watch TV, etc., so we definitely something comfy because it will get a lot of use.

Anyone get a sectional and then regret it? I'm worried that the furniture arrangement options are limited with a sectional and it would be easier to rearrange with two pieces (sofa & loveseat).

Advice?

Re: the great sofa debate

  • I think I would do a sectional in a basement family room but a separate loveseat/sofa in a main floor family room.  I don't have a good reason...just my gut feeling.

My parents got a leather couch/loveseat that is really soft...it's like it is unfinished leather (but not suede).  I would not advise getting that.

  • My Mom and Dad have a leather sofa/loveseat combo. They love it. When we're there, my DH would rather sleep on the leater sofa than in the full sized bed with me. Honestly. They're very comfortable.

When we upgrade furniture, we'll get a sectional. I like sectionals just because I picture us both laying down on separate sections of the sectional watching TV or a movie.

  • We have a leather couch and 2 leather chairs in our living room for the past 7 years and I love them (and we use this room a lot)! I would probably only buy leather from now on because it wears really well. Also, it's really easy to change the look of the room with a few new pillows, throws, etc. I  probably change out pillows every 1-2 years and it feels like it's a whole new look.

  • Thanks for the input!

I think I'm convinced to get the leather, I'm still debating on the sectional.

We bought a sectional for our basement family room, but because of the way that room is configured, there's really only one way to place the furniture that makes sense. Since I knew we wouldn't be rearranging furniture in there, it didn't bother me to get a sectional. I love the sectional we bought for the basement, it's so comfy. I'm just not sure about the main level family room. I think I agree with Kiz that maybe a sectional seems too casual for something other than a basement family room? Our whole house is pretty casual, though, we don't have a formal or fussy feeling house at all.

  • I used to have a sectional that I loved because it was sooo comfortable, but there was only one way that it worked in my apt.  Had to get rid of it when I moved out of that apt, because it wouldn't fit in the place I was moving into.  I like that there is room for lots of people to sit - like when we have ppl over to watch a ball game or whatever.  But don't like that your arranging options are more limited with the sectional.

We got a new leather sofa & loveseat in the fall and I really like them.  We have a lab that sheds like crazy so it's nice to just brush the hair off.  They are very comfortable.  I don't like that we can only get about 5 ppl seated comfortably though for when we have ppl over to watch the game.... but oh well.

We did a lot of searching and ended up having great luck at Royal Star in South St. Paul.   They are a liquidator so their stock is ever changing and they might only have one of somthing, so you sometimes will get a floor model.  But, we got our sofa & loveseat for $595.  We also got our dining room table there.  Hightop table with butterfly leaf & 4 chairs for $350.  We almost got our coffee table/end table set there, but ended up getting those at Dock 86 - who also had a decent selection of stuff.
