commute from gaithersburg to herndon

what is this like? time was? do you have any tricks on ways to avoid 270/495

Re: commute from gaithersburg to herndon

  • If he's taking 270 to 495 to the toll road it usually takes about an hour, but I've seen it take up to 1 hour 45 minutes in the mornings, and the afternoons tend to be worse if you're leaving after 4:30 or so.  In the morning, 270 seems to be the worst part and the beltway seems to move decently, but in the afternoon the beltway is bad too. If he can work an early schedule, like 7-3 or something, it would be a much easier commute.  When 270 is especially bad in the mornings I try to take back roads that hit River Road so I can get right on the beltway.  The back roads are slower and sometimes get backed up, but they are usually faster than 270 if there is traffic (and at least it feels better than sitting still).  The good news is we're almost on summer and I think traffic seems much lighter in the summer so at least he'll have a few easier months before the bad traffic sets in.

Even with an early schedule, it is not a pleasant commute.  I commuted from Gaithersburg to Tysons for several years and worked 6:00-3:30.  The mornings were fine that early, but the afternoons took a minimum of 45 minutes on a good day.  Friday afternoons were always an hour, and if it was a rainy Friday afternoon, 90+ minutes (and probably another 30+ min to factor in the additional distance to Herndon).  As pp said, there are a couple options for backroads, but they are not great, as the main backups are usually on the Beltway and there is no real way to avoid that. Honestly, unless this is his dream job or he has been out of work and just needs to be employed, I wouldn't do it - it is a very stressful commute and it really takes a toll after a while (and this was when I was 22-25!).
