Williamsburg?

I know someone posted they were going to Williasmburg soon... or just did...

We are going in a few weeks, and I haven't been there since I was 10.  What are some fun things to do??

Thanks!

Re: Williamsburg?

  • DH and I just went over the weekend. We live about 2.5 hours away, so it was a nice easy mini-vacay for us.

As for things to do, there is the historical area (Colonial Williamsburg) and lots of shopping in the city of Williamsburg itself. Nearby there is also Busch Gardens/Water Country, Jamestown, and Yorktown.

DH and I like the history stuff, and for anyone who hasn't been there in a while, Colonial Williamsburg takes about 1-3 days to see depending on how much you want to see and how many buildings you visit, how many tours you take, etc. There are outlets about 10-15 minutes from the historical area as well as some very quaint shops between the historical area & the campus of William & Mary

Jamestown and Yorktown are about a day trip apiece, and it's easier to stay in Williamsburg and just shoot down the road to visit these 2 places. Busch Garden is the typical theme park, but I haven't been there since I was a teen, and since I can't go on many of the ides we skipped out on it yet again. It's also nearby and about a days worth of stuff to do, including a water park.

If you want to stay in Williamsburg, I highly recommend any of the hotels owned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation or a B&B, if you have the cash. If you're on a budget, the Patrick Henry Inn (not Patrick Henry Square, that is a time share owned by Bluegreen resorts) is pretty reasonable and doesn't require you to drive back and forth to get to the historical area (its about a block from the historical Capitol building, and we walked into the historical area every day), and it's pretty close to the "parkway" that you can take to Jamestown and Yorktown. The hotels on Bypass Road are also pretty good but when I look, they are always kind of pricey due to their proximity to the Visitor's Center.

Sorry for the length!!  If you have any questions, just hit me up on this thread or send me a PM. DH and I go to CW at least once a year for their Christmas celebration, which is amazing, so I know a fair deal about the area. Hope this all helped!

  • DH and I did Colonial Williamsburg as part of our honeymoon road trip. I LOVED IT! DH thought it was ok, but he's not big into History like me. We stayed at the Days Inn about 10 minutes away from the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center. We went to shop in the "village" area at the end of the Colonial road and we were going to have dinner out on one of the patio's and listen to the free concert they were having but it was so hot out (Beginning of August) that there was a black out due to the 110* heat. The shops were really cute though. If you have any questions you can PM me as well. Have fun!!!!

  • Williamsburg is also extremely close to Busch Gardens if you're interested in amusement parks.
