Nelly Update...long!

Most importantly, she's home & resting. The mass was just a fatty bump. I'm also happy to say that she no longer has stinky breath...for now.

While I'm trying to keep that in perspective, I'm a little ticked off. Apparently, our vet didn't remove her bump when she was under anesthesia. There was some screw up in the paperwork that she was given that only stated a teeth cleaning. I don't expect her to remember everything, but we were just there 2 weeks ago making arrangements to do this. DH signed paperwork that stated they were doing both procedures. So, she did it under local anesthesia while Nelly was still pretty doped up. She said as long as she wasn't reacting to it, she knew Nelly wasn't feeling any pain.

IDK if anyone remembers, but I posted awhile ago that we got the bump tested and the results were inconclusive as far as a fatty mass or cancer. They recommended that it should be removed at a small fee of $900. We had lots of issues with this...cost, inconclusive tests, putting her through surgery for possibly no reason, etc. Of course, we were still concerned about her bump. It was very hard, and didn't move. DH talked to our vet on his last visit to see if she'd remove it while she got her teeth cleaned, and our vet agreed. So....our bill was $70. This is awesome...no doubt. However, it pisses me off that they were basically going to rip us off (her teeth were due for cleaning at that point too).

In defense of our regular vet, she was not the one who gave us that quote. It was the other vet in the office that works with her. We've known our vet a long time & is a family friend. I also understand that she runs a corporate-owned vet clinic & I get that they have policy & procedures to follow. However, this was clearly an option especially when we stated that $900 was not financially feasible for us.

Also, her liver enzymes are up. DH didn't tell me this 2 weeks ago, but apparently they've climbed again. He didn't ask what that could mean and I want to shake him! So, I looked it up. There are a few things...might be nothing, but we need to keep an eye on it and possibly do some tests.

Thanks for all of the T&P and Nestie vibes! And for letting me vent!

Re: Nelly Update...long!

  • Very glad she is OK and happy abou ther not having stinky breath, that is the worst, especially if they are lap dogs! :)
  • Geez, I would be ticked too!  Glad she's doing ok.

  • I am so relieved for you (and Nelly) but wow I would be pretty annoyed too especially considering how the girl acted when you first called for an update. Seems a little unprofessional.

Many more t&p's for her enzymes to drop to a normal level!

I agree that it definitely seems unprofessional.  I'm glad Nelly is doing well though.  I'll continue to keep her in my thoughts and prayers though!

  • Well, I am happy the bump came back just as a fatty bump.  But I am sorry you had such a run around with your vet.  And I am sorry about the liver enzymes.  I hope it turns out to be nothing serious.

  • Thanks, ladies! I really appreciate all of the support & so does Nelly!

  • So good to hear the bump is nothing serious, and I agree, kind of unprofessional on the vets part. Thanks for the updates and continued T&P for Nelly!

  • Poor Nelly!  That is strange that it is just a fatty tumor even though it was very hard and didn't move.  Good for her, though!  So you ended up getting her teeth done and the bump removed under local all for 70 bucks?  Or just the bump with local for 70?

As far as her liver enzymes, did they tell your DH what the numbers were?  We usually don't start to worrry about elevations unless they are at least double and sometimes even triple the normal range.  Also, don't let anything you read online scare you.  We hate when clients say they "read online" because a majority of the time they self diagnose with some crazy, outlandish thing.

    Keep us posted for sure!

Yes, we got her teeth cleaned and the bump removed for $70. We have her on their Wellness Plan, and teeth cleaning is covered. The vet should've removed the tumor before coming out of anesthesia, but she didn't and had to do a local. Fortunately, Nelly was still really doped up, so she didn't feel it.

She didn't tell DH & he didn't ask about the enzymes, which is why I want to shake him! I don't know what her numbers are or what that meant until I looked it up. I'm not going to worry too much about it until I know more. I just wanted to have an idea of what we're looking at. She's been fine, not drinking a ton of water or anything abnormal. Her comprehensive is coming up, plus her stitches need to get removed, so we'll probably check them again. This time I'll go so I can get the answers!
