Irrational random vent - dog related
We just had all of the fascia board on our house replaced. The guys who did the work were really nice and it was completed in 3 days. They had a dog (young black lab mix) in their van, who apparently comes on all their jobs. Fine- we love dogs. The dog's owner, who was the boss I guess- asks me if it's OK if they tie the dog up in the front yard, I said fine. So when I go out the first day they are here I say hi to the dog and he is bouncing around- I ask how old he is and he says he just turned 1 and is doing well in obedience classes- then I see them - BALLS.
Really? REALLY?
I then realized why my dogs were barking a little more than usual, etc. I know it's none of my business, because it's not my dog, but I just don't understand why someone would not have their mixed breed dog fixed. I am

Obviously, I cannot speak for the owner....but Jackson (black lab) will be one in just over a week and he has not been fixed yet. I have read many places that with larger breed dogs, it it beneficial to them to wait to have them fixed. We have an appointment for his castration (I'm sorry...I just keep referring to it as that), on May 27. But we decided that the health benefits for waiting at least 12-18 months were worth it.
Again, I can't speak for the owner, maybe he read the same things I did...who knows?

this is one of two things that I'm not just eye-rolling judgey about, or internal comment judgey, or even internet judgey - but full on, in person, giving you the stink eye if i don't know you and will absolutely say something about it if I know you judgey. As in, I think less of you as a grownup capable of rational decision making judging.

I am on the same page as you though. There is a dog in our neighborhood who is ALWAYS outside and we've learned from experience that he has quite a temper. And everytime we walk by the yard he runs up and down the fence barking at as with his balls flapping in the wind. It makes me stabby....not to mention the dog seems to be an outdoor dog.
I agree, from my research even if I wasn't showing my dog, he would not be neutered until at least 18 months old. If I didn't know the age of the dog or have had them have a good reason, I would have judged too though. It's just my nature but then again I'm sure I'm judged by people. I'm happy to discuss it though if asked.
I agree- w/i reason- most people who own purebred dogs are not showing them. A purebred overweight lab is clearly not a show dog (I am looking at you my neighbors who have the dog that got loose on my EDD w/ DS and I drove down the road and took her back to your house) - I got a whole earful from the owner about how she has some fabulous pedigree and they bought her from Mass and had her flown down, etc.
I would think that if this dog owner had plans on getting his dog neutered he would have told me, considering we had a conversation about how many dogs are agitated by unaltered males.
yeah, if it's young, or obviously a really nice dog purebred (i.e. not a 95 lb overweight lab. Or a pit mix. Or a 12+ year old GSD with awful hips - all the sorts of unaltered dogs I see regularly at our dog park) then I'll usually give them a mental pass. But most dogs I see (or personally know) who haven't been fixed have absolutely no business carrying on their bloodlines.
