NER: Electric Bill Deposit???

wtf? I got my first electric bill. My charges were $2.82....and then amt due is 172.82...because you have to establish credit with them? I've never heard of this before.

1) I have credit. Use that.

2) I can't afford 170.00 right now.

3) I think 170.00 is excessive.

I'm waiting for them to call me back. I'm so angry.

Re: NER: Electric Bill Deposit???

  • Is this PG&E?  Although I don't know about the amount, I know they do charge deposits on new accounts.
  • yeah, I've seen that.

When I moved into one place, I had to physically bring a certified check / money order to the utility... $150

I had absolutely sterling credit at the time, but they wouldn't even turn the power on until they got my deposit.

  • ok they credited it. they never ran a credit check for me.....roll eye.

    I like 2.82 more than 172.82

  • I think it's fairly common.  When you speak with them, ask them if there is another way you can establish credit.  I know in Oregon (different Public Utility Commission but still...), there are multiple ways one can establish credit, paying a deposit is the default.  If they tell you it's the only way, ask if you can break it up into installments.
  • A deposit prior to starting a new utility service is common. When the service is discontinued, the money is refunded if not needed for non-payment of the account.
  • IndifferentThat was nice that they waived it.  Our business was required to put a separate deposit on every account we've opened with the utility company.  The latest one is almost $400.
