Just plain frustrated and down

I've been laid off since January and have had two interviews total.  The interviews were weeks ago and I have not heard back from either one of them.  I get that I didn't get the jobs, but I'm just at the point of feeling lost now.

I was with my previous company for 20 years!  Being in my mid-40's, I just feel lost now. I read job listing after job listing and don't know where in the hell I fit anymore.  I apply for things I am either over qualified for or not even sure what all the qualifications mean.

I search local company websites as well as the big name ones and everything is starting to look like a foreign language.

How do you get through it?

Re: Just plain frustrated and down

  • I feel the same way! My job was cut twice this year due to teachers unions, (the subs aren't empolyees, so we get treated like sh** and they make up lies about us.)  No one can help us, because we aren't part of the union!

One of my friends suggested that I just get  a job UNTIL I find something else.  Maybe you should. Have you ever worked retail? I did for a while ('cause the state I was living in required a test to sub even for degreed people ,and the math was hard).  Retail is actually fun for short term work.  I worked at Hallmark and helped people shop, and had "customer" friends. I was getting paid to help people shop!

Or volunteer and you'd be amazed how it lifts your spirits!

  • It is very frustrating!  I am right there w/ you.  I have to think that eventually something will work out.

  • I am right there with you! Totally get what you're going through.

This is my first time being unemployed, I"ve had 2 phone interviews and one long in person interview which I thought went great, was an excellent match, my background was almost identical to what the job described which doesn't come by anymore and they even told me "I have a good feeling about this interview" and "at this point you know more than we do on this technique you'll be a great addition" at the end. Still didn't hear from them. So makes you think what went wrong? The follow up email was never answered and most likely I'll never know.

I see new job postings that are not really good fits but realistically a job that matched my background won't show up all that often, I know I shouldn't think this way but given I applied to over 100 jobs and the only one I got called in for an interview was the one whose job description matched my previous job 100% I think to myself am I going to hear from these jobs? experience shows they only want to hire you for what you've done not for what you think you're capable of or want to do...

I'm so tired of this process. The feeling of uselessness and just not knowing when I'll end up with a job is so frustrating. and like I posted yesterday I am lucky to have a supportive DH but still there are days I feel so guilty for putting our goals on holds even though it's really not my fault and I am doing everything to land a job..

  • I just wanted to chime in to say I know how you're feeling. I'm about to lose my job (it's a fellowship, so I can't collect unemployment when I'm done either...grr) and I've been frantically applying for jobs since January. So far, I've had 2 interviews. One got back to me (months later) to say that they went with someone else, and the other hasn't but gave me the feeling that they won't be following up. I spend all of my free time applying for jobs, and I work weekend at a P/T job because going without income for even a month will ruin my credit (student loans will NOT put off payment any longer). It's so frustrating because we feel totally capable but it's hard to find something out there that exactly meets what we used to do, and sometimes it's hard to imagine ourselves in some of the positions listed online. Usually, if I see even one thing that matches up with what I've been doing, I throw my hat into the ring. I might as well, right?
  • I've been unemployed a couple of times. Use your time to do things that you want to do- I gardened, joined MeetUp groups, worked on personal projects, went to the gym, read blogs and books related to my industry,  etc. I found that when you have things to focus on, you worry less. Hang in there!
  • It's only been 4 months, a drop in the bucket after 20 years of employment!  I was out of work for 9 months and it's tough out there. If you are floundering with what you want to do, have you considered going back to school to study something very specific (i.e. getting certified as something or other)?

Also, volunteer! You'll meet new people who may have job leads for you, not to mention helping others, having a sense of purpose and feeling good about what you're doing.

  • Volunteering sounds good and would actually make me feel useful and I'll learn something but when I went to my unemployment orientation, they told us it was illegal to volunteer or (do an internship) and claim unemployment benefits.
  • I am sorry you are feeling frustrated and down.  There are so many of us out there that feel similar to you whether they are unemployed, underemployed or just afraid to leave a job they don't like in fear of not finding something else.

I just wanted to remind you to use your network.  Job posting are receiving hundreds of applicants many who are overqualified for the position.  Put yourself in the employers shoes...wouldn't you rather hire someone that you know, have spoken to or was recommended to you?

I currently fall under the "underemployed" category and have been spending my free time picking up temporary positions in the field I am interested in, doing informational interviews, emailing/contacting friends and professional in the field to see if they have heard to any openings and putting myself out there as often as possible.  It is very difficult for me because I am not a self-promoter by nature and prefer my work to speak for itself, but I am already seeing positive results.  If nothing else, my network is keeping their eyes peeled for me and many have offered to recommend me if needed.

Keep your head up and try and think of ways to improve your job hunting skills.  For me, what I was doing wasn't working so I am trying soemthing different and hoping for positive results.

    Best of luck!
