DC First-time Homebuyer Tax Credit

Hi ladies! I don't post much on these boards, but I was hoping someone can help me out with this...

My fiance and I just bought a  condo in Cleveland Park (first home) and were told by several people (and confirmed by the DC tax and revenue website) that the tax credit was extended through 2011.  I called the IRS to find out how to claim it and they told me to file the form 8859...however, when I pointed out to the that the form specifically says for homes purchased it 2010, the only advice she had was 'to keep an eye out for the new form for 2011'.  I called the DC tax and revenue office, but was put on hold for 40 minutes on 2 separate days, and eventually gave up.  I emailed them, but of course got no response.

Has anyone gone through this process or have any advice? Should we just submit the 2010 form??

Thanks so much!

Re: DC First-time Homebuyer Tax Credit

  • When I bought my place in DC (back in 2006) I just filed the form when I filed my 2006 taxes. So, even though I closed in March of 06, I didn't get the credit until I filed my taxes in February of 07.
  • Oh, ok good to know! I was under the impression that we would amend our 2010 taxes, but we may just have to be patient and wait haha.

When did you buy?  2010 or 2011? If you bought in 2011, the credit is for this year's taxes, which are filed in 2012.

  • We bought our house in April 2010.  We amended our previous year's taxes so we would not have to wait (on the advise of our CFP).  We had no issues and received a nice check from the IRS.
  • Thanks for the help! I was told that we would be able to amend our 2010 taxes with no problem just as MrsHabious did.  I guess the only problem really is that the form specifically states for houses bought in 2010.  Our realtor is looking into it now so hopefully we'll figure it out.

  • By chance, does NoVA have something similar?
