if you have an iPad....

our seven year old laptop is biting the dust. We have a desktop computer that is our "main" computer that I use for editing, paying bills etc......this little laptop is mainly to check email, screw around on the internet (nest/ESPN) etc. (we never intended to have two computers, but the laptop was free, long story).

b/c this second computer does need all the much memory or power, we are thinking an iPad might serve as a better option. As it is basically designed just to check email and use various internet programs.

so if you have one, do you love it? what do you use it for? are you glad you got it? does it replace a computer at home or just supplement it?

Re: if you have an iPad....

  • We got a first gen iPad when the second came out and the prices dropped.  The second gen didn't have any new features we really cared about.  Who goes around using the iPad as a camera??  We both have iPhones and macbooks, so the front camera for facetime/video chat is really not needed in our house.

I LOVE it.  I love to use it for reading/e-books, I love to use it to check websites (the nest mosty, haha), I keep my email and facebook on my phone, I don't use it for that but DH does and loves it.  It's great for traveling -- books and movies.  We have just the wi-fi version, but since we both have the internet connectivity on our iPhones, it's great for just having around the house to use, and for when we're at our parent's houses and don't want to drag our laptops with us.  I also use it a lot in the kitchen for having recipes up while cooking.   We use it to watch Netflix in bed, or when traveling.  It's fabulous.

I think it will do exactly what you are looking for, just to have around to check websites, email, weather, etc.  I also love it because now I can stay in bed and read and not keep DH up with the light on.  He likes to go to sleep earlier than me, and I love to read in bed.  I feel like I gained an extra half hour a day of reading time since I use the iPad for a book in bed while he's already asleep.

I had been indifferent to the iPad, but you now have me sold.  I want one just after reading your post!

I wasn't sure we 'needed' one with the iPhones and macbook, and I suppose we still don't 'need' it per say, but it would be quite hard to go back to living without it.  I'm spending two weeks at my parents house after school gets out and then a week at a conference at UCONN in July and I know it will be so perfect for then.  DH has a conference in a few weeks in New Orleans and I'm hoping he will leave it here with me and not take it with him, hahaha.

But the reading in bed thing is seriously the best part about it.  I wanted an e-reader, but knew the Nook and Kindle wouldn't let me read at night without the bedside light on since they have no backlighting.  I really do feel like it's given me the gift of time and there aren't very many other things (gadgets or otherwise) I have that I can say that about.   If either of us were in a position to use mass transit on our commute it would get a ton more use as well.

Ditto all the uses PP have said, but also consider an Android tablet.  I have a Xoom, and I LOVE it.  There's a bunch of different Android-based laptops coming out.  If you think you might miss a keyboard (I do, it can be a pain to type on a touchpad), the Asus Transformer is pretty awesome.  http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/asus-eee-pad-transformer/4505-3126_7-34467853.html

  • We got one for Christmas.  My two year old is pretty much the only one who uses it.  It's ok for checking things like TMZ.  For e-mail and bill paying, I prefer my laptop

  • We have an iPad2. I like it for some things - the ABC player app, the Washington Post app (that interface is much better than their new web design), Twitter, Kindle, and DS loves Garage Band :-) We also have Skype and Facetime, and I Facetimed with my friends twice already this weekend when they were in CA together.

Right now with the way our house is laid out (one floor with one big living area) my laptop is already out in the main room, so the iPad is kind of ancillary. I feel like we're not using it to its fullest potential. But for what you're talking about, it sounds like it would be perfect - it's totally portable, easy to use, especially for just browsing internet and whatnot. You might want to up the memory if you want to use it for iTunes or uploading photos, but we got the most basic version and it's been great so far.

P.S. There's a pretty good ESPN app, and the iSwifter app isn't perfect but it lets you use Flash sites (usually not supported by Apple).

  • We bought M&FIL one for Christmas and that is exactly what they use it for, plus travel. Like a netbook (which would be a lot cheaper, actually. You might look in to that), but more fun because of the apps. They rave about it, even though they only use a small portion of it's functionality. But they also don't have smartphones, so having that much internet be so portable is kind of groundbreaking for them.
  • The nook has been great so far for random surfing, reading books and magazines, and playing angry birds.
  • I should add - for $100 more than an ipad (approx $600 total), you could get BOTH a nook Color, and a cheap laptop, since the nook color is only $250.
