New House Speaker?

Do they get to reselect this with the new Congress?

I think if they can, they will.

Re: New House Speaker?

  • Coups like that are generally unheard of. ?They only have a vote when the post becomes vacant unless there are some sort of?shenanigans?going on.
  • Aw, Pelosi gets so much hate. I don't no why. She is ushering in a new democratic tide. Look she didn't rock the boat too much in her tenure. Good for her. Now we see our Democratic landslide.
  • I haven't followed the House much.  Would you give me a recap on what Pelosi's done (or not done)?
  • I don't hate her at all, but I think she does not really have leadership qualities.  I think someone else could do a better job.

She just doesn't have control of the Democrats in Congress. ?Case in point: in her first misguided act as Speaker she backed Murtha for Majority leader (when Steny Hoyer had been the minority Whip for years). ?No one listened to her and Steny is the Majority leader.

  • There is no way Pelosi will be unseated.  I don't get the hate for her either.  She's viewed as largely responsible for the seat gains in 2006 and will get a lot of credit for the pick-ups in 2008.

I haven't exactly been studying the House daily or anything, but I know she hasn't done a great job of bringing everyone together, and I think the infighting during the bailout mess highlighted that.  I don't know, maybe anyone else would have had the same results and the divisiveness was more the House Rs fault than hers.  But if nothing else, I think she is a symbol of that divisiveness and I would rather we start fresh.

  • I did know about the bailout issue (at least I'm not totally ignorant) but I figured there had to be more than that.  I guess not.  I mean, I understand you on the lack of leadership, but that's kinda amorphous as opposed to a series of missteps.  Thanks for the explanation.

And as a Marylander, I was not happy about the dis to Steny!

I also remember a series of instances after the Murtha/Hoyer incident when she should have been able to bring enough Dem votes to the table but couldn't. ?Hang on and I'll try and find the info.?

  • I don't understand this "doesn't control the democrats" line of reasoning. What exactly has she done/not done that has led to unruly Ds that is vastly different from other Speakers? I think the lady deserves a little more credit. In fact, the democrats are more unified and disciplined than I have ever seen them. Further, the Reps were supposed to dominate for decades (at least that was the plan) and Pelosi stopped it. Are we being harder on her b/c she is a woman? A liberal? A liberal woman from SF? She's not perfect (no speaker is) but she is doing a pretty good job in my book (two straight elections with Dem gains is no easy feet). I can see why the Rs have issues with her but for the life of me I don't get the D hate fest piled on Pelosi.

Um, no.  I am a liberal woman, so how would that make any sense?  I agree with her on everything as far as I can tell on paper.

I think her need to trash talk Republicans during the bailout soured me on her for good.  Not that I don't agree, but it was not the time at ALL.  It shows bad judgment in my mind.  Hopefully if she stays, That One can give her some guidance.
