For those that travel for work...

Does your company issue corporate credit cards or advances for your travel? I've had a corporate AMEX at the last 3 companies I've worked for but I started a new company that doesn't issue cards. They expect you to pay and expense everything for reimbursement after the fact. I find that unusual.

FYI, I don't travel more than once a month but others travel much more frequently.

Re: For those that travel for work...

  • Each company is different. I've seen it done both ways.

    My company issues a CC.

  • I don't travel a ton but enough to where I know the entire process inside and out. I could get a travel card but I'd rather earn cash back on my personal card. Embarrassed We are reimbursed for airfare right away and 5 days before the the trip we can opt to receive up to 90% of the total estimated cost, minus the airfare that was already paid. I used to do the 90% thing but the process of giving back unused money is a PITA so I quit that. I just get my airfare reimbursement right away and then do after the fact everything else.

  • I've also seen it both ways. If I am in a position where I travel frequently, I usually have a corporate card, or I have a possibility of a cash advance. I always just paid and then got reimbursed.
  • We have to pay out and then we have to submit everything for reimbursement. Except for large things such as plane tickets, we have to submit approval for the trip and then it has to be approved and then they basically schedule it for you and you don't get to provide much input.
  • My company arranges and pays for airfare.  But, I pay hotel and everything else out of pocket and get reimbursed.
  • I've seen it both ways. I really disliked when they had me buy it myself and reimbursed me later. For us, there are often a lot of other expenses (printing $2000 at Kinkos if we didn't have time to print before we left), and I hate having to pay my own money for that, even if I'll get reimbursed eventually.

  • We have a corporate Amex. I don't travel, but those who do say they prefer this to reimbursment.

  • My DH has a corporate Amex he uses for meals, travel expenses, etc. He gets reimbursed for everything, but it has to come out of our own pocket first. Really sucks when he's out of town for a week or two and we have to foot that huge bill first.
  • My new company doesn't have corporate cards, either, but I'm told they're very quick to reimburse. My fiance and I see it as a good thing for us. We'll use one of our rewards cards exclusively for my work expenses. We'll never have to pay for anything, but we'll get a bundle in credit card rewards.

  • The way your company does it is exactly as mine does, and I travel every week. It wasn't so unusual for me as the last 2 companies I worked for had the same policy, but I know others find it difficult.
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.
  • I've always had to expense everything.  Which really sucked because I'm horrible at keeping receipts.  I worked for one company that had a hard time believing I drove as many miles as I did.

  • I travel about once a month for training at our training facility, about 3 hours away.  The classes always start first thing in the morning, so they always get me a hotel room.  Our training department books the hotel rooms (there is a hotel litterally right next door to the training facility), and everything else is expensed.

  • My work has you pay up front and then they reimburse you on your next check. Unless you have our secretary book your flight. She can also book hotel but they usually want a credit card on file so I book mine and get reimbursed. They also reimburse food up to a certain amount.

It kind of sucks when you book a trip in advance and have the costs just sitting on your credit card, but payroll gets your money back within a week or 2.

  • I had an AMEX at the first firm I worked for and so did my husband, so I did find it strange when the 2nd firm I joined did it the way your new company does (you pay everything and they reimburse). Apparently, it's pretty common.

  • We purchase plane tickets on a company card (one person has the card and we make online orders) and sometimes hotels ? I prefer to purchase it myself for the bonus rewards (especially on flights) but it is usually looked down on.  While we are away from the office we buy everything ourselves and turn in receipts to get reimbursed.  I cashed in all of my miles a year ago for my honeymoon and I already have 55,000 again.  15,000 are from the miles I get for work flights, and about half of the rest are from the items I get reimbursed for.  I love it.  If you get a good rewards card, you will too.

I worked for a larger company and had my own company card ? I still had to turn in all my receipts and do a lengthy expense report, but I didn?t get any special rewards for doing it since it was a company card.

  • I get reimbursed and so does DH.  I prefer it this way because I get the AMEX points.  Between our airline and hotel points from work travel, we hardly ever have to pay for hotels or airfare when we take vacations.  My company is good about issuing reimbursement checks promptly.

I dated a guy who owned a decent size business that used corporate cards.  His employees would use the corporate cards for all business expenses and then he and his partners would get huge amounts of rewards points from all the company spending.

Having seen this both ways, I would much prefer to get the benefits of the rewards without actually having to spend the money.

  • From the person that had to process/approved a ton of expense reports... we found the people with corporate cards charged more per trip than those that had personal cards and had to get reimbursed.
  • I worked for a company that did issue a corporate cc, but then stopped when they were purchased by another company. I had to just my own credit card and get reimbursed. I did not mind because they were quick to reimburse and I got that many more miles on my credit account. If they were not quick to reimburse, I would have talked to them about other options such as an advance.

  • My company has us pay out of pocket and reimburses later. That was hard for me to handle since this was my first job out of college. I traveled the most at the beginning of my employment, and the one credit card I had had a very low limit and it was practically maxed out from school! I'm glad I don't have to travel now.
  • Thanks everyone, I guess my company's policy is not uncommon after all.
