F/U: Letting SIL Borrow Car

Thank you for all the advice.  Dh and I talked and decided not to let her use the car for the drivers test.  She is, of course, pissed.  To my knowledge she has not driven very much in her life.  She's never received formal training, not even from her parents.  I feel bad that she's upset, but I just don't want to be liable.

  • Glad to hear this is the decision you came to.

This is really up to your MIL and FIL to deal with.

    Hope is not a strategy.

I agree.  The family is so weird (I know... not very nice to say about my IL's).  MIL and FIL are divorced, and FIL never comes through on any promises, so perhaps that's what SIL is afraid of.  Either way, it is not dh's and my responsibility.

  • I think you made a sound decision.  Maybe you can take her out to dinner or something to celebrate when she passes her test.
  • I think that's a good call. For me, I wouldn't be so concerned about her damaging the car during the test (since she would not be driving alone but with the DMV tester).

I would be concerned, however, that she would expect to be able to borrow your car after passing the test when she wanted/needed to. So I think it would have been a dangerous precedent to set.
