Mirena users come in

I just had one put in last night.  I did fine; def not the most comfortable thing in the world.  The insertion was more painful that I was expecting, but thankfully that part only lasted a short while.  The cramps, though, suck.  Does this pass eventually?  They aren't so bad that I can't function by any means, but they def don't feel good.  I was just curious how long you felt the cramping??  I expect it will prob continue to subside over the day today but I'm def ready for them to go away!  TIA!

Re: Mirena users come in

  • Sorry you're cramping. I had mine inserted over a year ago (hard to believe it's been that long!), and I cramped for a couple days later. Be sure to keep up on ibuprofen or Advil for inflammation and cramping. Hope you feel better soon!

  • I also cramped for a few days but then it stopped. Definitely take something for the cramps (Excedrin works well for me)

  • Sorry to hear about your pain, but I had slight cramps for 2-3 days. I LOVED Mirena, I basically never got my period. The only problem is that I gained 30lbs and I got horrible, painful cystic acne! I had it removed last August. I JUST started getting my period regularly last month. It took a VERY long time for my body to get get back to "normal". I don't know if it is like that for everyone, but my system was really out of whack for a long time. I wish you luck, If you don't have side effects, I am sure you will love it.
  • My cramps only lasted a day or two. For me, it was worth it for 5 years of not worrying about birth control. I had no side effects, either, and my period disappeared. Hope you fell better soon
  • i was recently told by my doctor that i should start using Mirena ( i had a stroke when i was 16 so i can't use anything else but this) but i'm afraid of the pain and the side effects, is there anything you all can tell me that you have had problems with with Mirena... my cousin said she gained tons of weight but that was just it any other problems i should know about from actual users before i consider getting it put in?

I might have also gained a couple pounds after getting Mirena, but i'm about 99.9% sure Mirena had nothing to do with it (just haven't been as active as I used to + I've been a little more indulgent with desserts Embarrassed). As far as acne goes, I don't think my skin has worsened, but it wasn't perfect before Mirena either.

I haven't experienced any problems from Mirena that I know of, although everyone's different. The benefits, however, are great: I haven't had a period in over a year, don't get cramps nearly as often as I used to, and it's super convenient. Mirena's pretty much the most amazing birth control EVER (haha, I'm a big fan. Can you tell?). So, if you're seriously thinking about getting Mirena, I say go for it.

By the way, sorry to hear you had a stroke. What a blessing that you're okay!

  • Thanks! I'm glad that i was able to get a great answer, It does sound like you get more benefits than negatives, i wasn't too sure about it seeing as my doctor was telling me the benefits but i was just thinking " oh, she gets paid to say these things"  and thank you for your concern about my stroke, it was a very trying time indeed.

  • I didn't have any trouble with side effects.  I hope that yours goes away soon.

  • I had mine taken out, i started noticing hair loss, after 6months of having it in, i thought it was stress at first, but it continued and continued, i went to the doctor and he said that some women will have some hair loss side effects, so if you see your shedding some unusual hair loss,  , get the iud out. besides the cramping it lasted a couple of weeks and after that i had no periods , until they took it out.
  • I have had mine for a year this week.  I am also on my first period in a year since August.  I have spotted a few times, or cramped every once in a while when I should be on my period, but always mild, and never lasting a day or two until now.  (this is going from having a period for a year, and it taking 3 months for this to kick in and stop the bleeding).

As for cramps, I cramped for 2 weeks after getting mine.  To the point I even went in and had it checked via ultrasound to make sure it was in correctly.  It was fine, I just had to heat and take it easy.  After the first several days, I mostly noticed it after exercise.  I would get a really nauseous stomachache and cramps after I went for a short walk, or tired to ride my bike.  I lived on 800 mg ibuprofen for a few weeks!!

As for side effects, I think the biggest thing I have noticed is a extra facial hair growth on my chin and under my chin...I get a few more whiskers than I used to.  But those are easily tweezed most of the time and I am fine.  I love having it and probably won't use any other kind of birth control ever, as pills don't do so well for me.  Good luck with your cramps.

  • I've had mine for 2.5 years and love it. I haven't had any problems with it. I've had a few cramps maybe for 6-7 days the whole time I've had it. Occasional spotting which started right around the 2 year mark but I love it. We are starting to talk about when I will get mine removed (so was can start TTC! yay!) but I want wait until we are absolutely sure because I have had such good luck with mine! I hope yours gets better!
