lets talk cameras

obviously most of us take pictures all the time. I have a point and shoot that I love love love. But with a baby on the way I think its time we step it up to a big clunker to get some awesome shots. However I havent taken a photography class since college and I have no idea whats a good or crappy camera anymore with all of the new options.I am pretty brand loyal so Id like to only buy a canon or nikon- Ive found them to always take equally good photos.

So..for those of you with fancy cameras what do you have?

Do you only shoot in automatic mode? Or are you a little bit more experimental?

How did you decide which camera to purchase?

Did you purchase any extra lenses or accessories (besides a camera bag)?

So..for those of you with fancy cameras what do you have? Canon T1

Do you only shoot in automatic mode? Or are you a little bit more experimental? I mostly do automatic but B is experimental... he took a bunch of photography classes thru HS and college but nothing else.

How did you decide which camera to purchase?  We went to Bergen County Camera in Westwood and played with a few.

Did you purchase any extra lenses or accessories (besides a camera bag)? We just got a zoom lens for Christmas and a speedlite... can't think of anything else we have right now

  • I have the Nikon D7000 and D3000 and I absolutely love them! :) I've always had Nikons and thats why I choose this brand. Im just a fan of Nikon and the way the cameras are set up. I got the D3000 first because it was my first DSLR and I wasn't sure how well I would be able to use it. Its an amazing starting camera for someone who hasn't used a DSLR camera. I decided that I wanted to upgrade about a year later and got my D7000. I use to shoot in automatic modes and sometimes will if Im unsure. Otherwise I try to always shoot in manual. As for extra accessories I have a zoom lens as well as the speedlite flash. They are both great to have :) Hope this helps
  • I've been researching for some time now. I think im going to take the plunge and get the Canon T1i with the kit lens (even though lots of people advise against it) and then also get a 50mm 1.8.

Im going to order it from B&H but  may take a ride to Bergen Camera just to get some instruction and guidance. Let me know if you want to go one day.

What do you have? We have two "fancy" cameras - a Canon 5d Mark II and an Olympus Pen.

Do you only shoot in automatic mode? Or are you a little bit more experimental? We play around with them - slowly learning all the tricks.

How did you decide which camera to purchase? We did some research and played around with some of our friends' cameras (we have friends in the business). We also had to use up expense money from my husband's fellowship - so our budget was pretty large. The quality of the photos that the Olympus Pen shoots are really not much different than the Canon, so it's a good camera for travel purposes, especially when you factor in the price differential.

Did you purchase any extra lenses or accessories (besides a camera bag)? We've been renting lenses for the Canon whenever we have a big occasion coming up. We haven't decided which lens we'd like to buy next.

  • So..for those of you with fancy cameras what do you have?  Canon T2iDo you only shoot in automatic mode? Or are you a little bit more experimental?  I shoot in automatic when I need the flash or need to take pics without worrying about lighting and getting the right settings.  Otherwise I shoot in manual.  I am working on learning more and more and taking pictures less and less not on automatic.  How did you decide which camera to purchase?  My BIL/SIL have the T1i and loved it.  It got great recommendations and reviews and I have always liked Canon.Did you purchase any extra lenses or accessories (besides a camera bag)?  So far I have an extra lens - 50mm 1.4.   I do plan to get another lens too.

    Nikon D300s & Nikon D80

Shoot in Automatic & Manual. Depends upon lighting conditions

If you can afford to do so, don't waste your $ on kit lenses. Buy yourself a good multipurpose lens like an 18-200mm that you will keep on the camera. The more you take a lens off your camera the dirtier the sensor gets. Nothing worse then taking a great photo and have spots all over the place from dust

I have always been a 100% Nikon guy and the Nikon D7000 has been getting incredible reviews. Not only does it have a nice 16MP sensor but it also shoots HD Video. If you can afford this camera, I would highly recommend it !
