Birth Photography

Okay I am not currently TTC and I don't check out the Bump, so forgive me if this is a commonly discussed thing.

The girl who did my TTD session is getting into birth photography.  From what I understand is you hire her to be in the room taking photos during the birth of your baby.  Have you girls heard of this?  Is it common in your area?  What do you think of it?

Re: Birth Photography

  • I've heard of it.  I'm not sure so much in Chicago area, but in my hometown area, I've surprisingly heard of a lot of families that do it.

I think I'd consider it because a lot of the pictures I've seen are soooo sweet.  As long as we met a photog and had a good vibe with them, I think I'd like to capture it on camera.  Maybe not coming down the canal and that jazz, but definitely holding for the first time, etc.

  • I've heard of it, but it's not common in my area.

I wouldn't consider doing this.  I feel like that moment is going to be huge and I want it to be intimate with my husband.  The photo I'd want (us holding the baby for the first time) is always captured anyway, so no need to have a photographer in there while my legs are wide open.

  • I've not heard of this, but I don't know that I would want someone in the room for all of that.  I'm already having hesitations about having our family waiting at the hospital (not in the room!) when Carter is born, so the thought of having someone who isn't family there really would bother me.

I think I want our first few hours to just be us...me, Chris, and Carter.  Not my parents, not his family, and certainly not a photographer.

But that's just me.  I'm pretty selfish!

ETA: I should say that I have a very good relationship with our family.  I just don't want the pressure of having to invite them into the room before I am actually ready.  Hopefully that makes sense.

    This, exactly.

I think I am the same way.  I could see how there could be some absolutely incredible moments captured, but for me I want the birth of my children to be a private thing.  We both have great relationships with our families, but have agreed that no one will be in the room but us when a baby is born.  I can't imagine telling MIL that we are having a photog in the room, but she isn't allowed!

Haha!  Good point!  That probably wouldn't go over very well, huh?

  • That would be a big no thanks.  I'd rather have some professional pictures taken a few days or weeks later once everybody is all cleaned up and not looking terrible.

Haha...I guess I think of that moment of intimacy similar to our first look.  Yeah the photog was there, but all we were thinking about was each other and we both completely forgot he was there.  I feel like it'd be similar for the birth of our children.

I don't think I'd want some staged looking photos of the first time I hold my baby.  I want a crap cell phone pic that Keith takes, where I look all crazy-haired and weepy eyed.  LOL  I'm a traditionalist like that.

  • Um noooooo!  I don't want any pictures of my peesh.  Especially when it's all angry!!!  That being said I have heard of it though.  I only want me and the hubbs in the room during the birth.
  • My DH doesn't want anyone in there!  I am trying to convince him to allow my sis to be a part of it and he is hesitant about that.  I can't imagine he or I would want a photographer there!

  • I've heard of it, but I'd have to take a pass on that...most hospitals in our area probably wouldn't even allow it.  You play hell getting a personal digital camera in there.  They're dang sure not going to allow a full-on studio!
  • The hospital that most women in my area give birth at have a photographer that they have hired and she comes around and does pictures the day after the baby is born, or if they are born in the middle of the night then she comes that morning close to lunch. (My cousin was born at 2AM and she came at 11AM and took pictures.) She has props and then just asks that you bring a blanket from home and she does pictures right in your room. I think the web site is www.babybellaphotograpy.com
