window repair?

Our neighbors managed to break the glass in one of our second story windows this weekend, as well as rip the screen.  My FIL and I are pretty handy, but neither of us can figure out how to get the window out of the frame in order to take it to the hardware store to get fixed.  Is there a service that comes out to your house to repair windows on the spot, or do I just need to find a handyman to come get it out of the window and take it over to the hardware store for us?

Any recs in NoVA for either?

Re: window repair?

  • When I had a window replaced I used a small window repair company.  He came out and looked and what he needed to replace and then came back in a day or so and did it right there on the spot.  I should mention that the inside of a double pane broke, I bought the house that way and did not notice it until the springs rains came and realized something wasn't quite right.  My guess is the previous owners broke the inside pain while moving out and cleaned it up really well.  Anyway, they do exist and I would start calling to price things and ask if they can just come out and replace the glass.  I would suggest going with a smaller company or a "window guy" as opposed to a big name, they will charge you less then the big names.  It was amazing.  I live in MD so I can't help much in that area.  Sorry.
  • Blaine Windows on Eisenhower Ave in Alexandria - I was the receptionist there a lifetime ago!  Although on-line all I'm seeing is their MD office listed.  Hmmm.  Maybe the Eisenhower one doesn't exist - but if I had to guess - the MD office services the whole metro area.

  • Artslvr - You're bringing back memories!  There's a Blaine Window that my dad used to order from (obscure supplies for his hardware store).  Is the repair business related to the catalog/wholesaler?

I bet it's the same.  They specialized in finding window parts that nobody else could find.  They also reglazed/rescreened windows, and had a repair service that would come to your house.
