I started a new job last week and so far I am unhappy with the office atmosphere.

The people seem unfriendly.

Most will say hi if they see you in the hall but no one has made any effort in getting to know me at all. There is a girl who sits behind me who was out all last week and she has passed my desk several times today and has not once introduced herself or said hi. I just find it really unwelcoming next to other places I have worked.

Anyone have any advice.? I need to be the friendly one I guess.

I was in a similar situation, it sucks but you have to be the bigger person and get to know those around you, it helped me out. Eventually people came to talk to me, although there was always one older women who just disliked me all around (for no apparent reason). Oh well you can't win them all, but try this approach. I hope it gets better for you!

You definitely need to take the initiative here. Sometimes office environments can be very difficult to crack. But unless you try to break into the group, they may not invite you in. I worked in an office for just over a year back in 2005/2006 that was one of the most "cliquey" work environments ever. But I never really made an effort and therefore was miserable the whole time. Try from the beginning and things might be different.

I suggest that you try to make the effort yourself. Even if it doesn't create any changes or friendship or just common office courtesy, at least you will know that you tried.

They are already comfortable with their office relationships. As the newbie, you need to take the initiative to say hello to them. As I am sure you know, the time on the job when most people are *least* busy is the beginning. Take that time to get to know your co-workers.
