Gardening ladies....

Any updates on your gardens?  DH and I worked in our yesterday (yes, call me craxy for doing it at alomst 40 weeks!).  We weeded and looked at everything we have growing.  I was able to pick 1 cucumber which I plan to put in a salad with tonight's dinner.  We also picked 2 stawberries that DH ate before I got to have one, he said they were really sweet.

We also found we have 5 heirloom sugar pumpkins (or watermelons), not sure what they are just yet since the markers we made for our seedling didn't last, the name got bleached out by the sun since we used a crappy felt-tipped pen to write with.  We ended up putting some hay under each of them since last year when we just left them on the ground most of them either rotted or got eaten by bugs.  Anyone else do that for things laying on the ground?

Re: Gardening ladies....

  • Going really well! On Sunday morning, I was tying up tomato plants and showed JJ all the red ones. He went inside, took the apples out of the basket, and handed it to me and told me I needed to 'harvest.' He's so cute, lol. Anyway, here's that, a whole whopping 6 hybrid grape/roma tomatoes.

What I thought was a zucchini plant, I'm not so sure anymore. I think I've been accidently cross breeding my spaghetti and butternut squashes, so we'll see how they grow. They look like fat butternuts with no neck, but they're the pale orange not yellow so I don't know. I have about 30 assorted squash and more bud each day, it's nuts!

I have eleventybillion green tomatoes spread over 15 or so plants, so just waiting for them to turn red, which I'm sure will be the week we're in Ohio!

And so far, not a SINGLE hornworm!!!!!

  • No hornworms here either! I'm just hoping that my also eleventybillion green tomatoes start ripening a wee  bit so that I can snatch them out of the plant and inside before the mockingbirds pillage them. I picked an enormous heirloom tomato bigger than my fist last week but it's still green, so I'm just letting it continue the slow process inside.

I have some random vine growing that I'm not sure what it is, and right when I was about to go out and buy more milkweed, 3 popped up from the seeds that fell last year, so I'm relatively good on that front.

Oh, and I densely planted another purple sage next to the first one, so I'm going to have to replant that before they both take over the entire garden with their hugeness. They're great for attracting butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, but they're so large!

  • Do either of you know anything about purple basil?  DH insisted we get purple basil seeds and planted them so now we have 3 purple basil plants, not to mention 4 or 5 sweet basil.  I love making pesto out of the sweet basil and use it in cooking but I have no idea if you can make pesto out of the purple.

  • Sure you can. Purple basil is a little spicier than regular, though, so you'll get a stronger taste out of it. I always add a little into my sauces after I add the regular basil to add a little more pungent flavor to it.

I would totally try the purple pesto, you never know! I saw it everywhere in Italy, so I'm guessing you can use it in almost the same way as sweet basil.

DH is still working on getting a raised bed in, so we'll likely do some later summer/early fall plants. I'm really looking forward to some peas, squash, lettuces, and other stuff like that. We're trying not to rush ourselves since we have so many projects on this house.

My mom gave Jeffery some seed packets last year for Easter (one of those little greenhouse things), and we never got to plant them. I wasn't sure they'd still be good, but we tried anyway, and several are doing awesome. I just had to transplant/thin them. He has several tomatoes (I transplanted more than a dozen into a bigger container, we'll probably pick the 4-5 strongest to transplant straight into the ground once they get a bit bigger and we figure out what we're doing with the landscaping. He also has more than a dozen marigolds (and some more seeds left, so we may plant more), and some impatien-like flowers that I can't remember the name for. We just planted the second half of the packet, since the first attempt didn't work. If they don't come up, no biggie. He's super excited about the ones he has now. He waters them every time we go outside (I got him a little spray bottle).

Otherwise, we're focusing on landscaping. Right now, we're removing several bushes from the front of the house, and planning on replacing them with a flower/herb garden. We also want to replace the bushes down the side with azaleas, but will do that slowly. And I just found out a week ago that we have a gardenia bush in the back, so I may put in a few more of those. They're one of my favorites.

Overall, I'm having a blast on the gardening/landscaping front!
