Relaxing vacation ideas needed

I'm trying to plan a vacation for our anniversary the first week of August. We're looking to go somewhere beautiful and relaxing. It could be a total lay-on-the-beach-and-do-nothing kind of destination, or a place where you can both kick back and relax, and explore new things. But it definitely should have a "relaxing" vibe to it. We probably don't want to spend more than $2k (if even that).

Any suggestions are super appreciated! Cool

Re: Relaxing vacation ideas needed

  • Hmm, do you mind staying in CA? I was going to suggest kauai (most relaxing place I've been so far) but I don't think you can do a week there for less than $2500 unless you go pretty cheap on the hotel.

I always loved Carmel Valley. Small town, good food and wine, beautiful views, there's definitely opportunities for hiking and the beach is right there in Carmel.

  • Staying in CA is fine. We don't even have to go for the full week. We could just do a few days somewhere. Especially if it is a lie-around-and-do-nothing destination, because I'll probably get stir crazy after a couple of days (DH is the do-nothing type of vacationer, and I'm the do-everything type -- and since we've done a few "active" vacations recently, I thought we should do one his way).

  • How about San Juan Islands in WA? Its sorta beachy (the water is not warm) and tons of outdoor activities. It wont be hot and humid like a lot of other places in the US on the east coast during that time.

You could also do the Oregon Coast.

Flying anywhere out of the country may put you over your 2K budget. I dont think you could do Mexico on that.. but could be wrong.

  • On Living Social Escapes, they have a ton of beachy places right now!  One of them is on Oahu for 5 nights for less that $600 (I think)...might be worth checking out...
  • You could do a Mexico all-inclusive package for less than $2k.  Maybe not for a full week, though.

But August is a pretty hot and humid time on the Pacific Coast (and hurricane season on the other side, I think).

What about Santa Barbara or somewhere along the Central Coast?

We've done the Sonoma Coast before, and it's nice, warm, and pretty inexpensive.

  • We're going to the Maritimes then. I'm not sure if the booking period has closed with Princess Cruises but I know the cheapest rooms/cabins at $800 for the 7 day cruise. It goes to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine, Rhode Island, Boston and New York City. Most meals are free on board (at the buffets). The port excursions are between $50-200 but they are optional. We are only doing two. For the other port stops we're just going to explore the areas on our own. Like in Boston we're doing the free walking tour of the Am Rev stuff. We're setting up stuff on our own in NYC.

  • What about renting a house in Cambria? You get your own space, a tv, hot tub at some places, usually within walking distance of the ocean. You can stroll the little shops and art galleries in the town when you get stir crazy. We've rented through CambriaVacationRentals.com several times and been very happy with them.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • Thank you for all of the awesome suggestions, ladies!

All of the great CA destinations gave me the idea of doing a Highway 1 road trip. So, now DH and I are exploring taking 8 or 9 days to drive down the coast and back (as far down as Dana Point). So, now I'm researching hotels we can stay at for a night or two along the way, and various places to check out. But, we'll try to keep it flexible so we can go with the flow.

The only issue is that it looks like a section of Highway 1 near Big Sur is closed due to a landslide. So, we're hoping that it will be repaired by the beginning of August (they're currently guessing June or early July, but I won't count on there not being delays).

I don't have any recs as we've never stayed anywhere along Hwy 1 but I'm glad you shared the info about the section by Big Sur being closed. Crap! I've never been there and have wanted to go for years but something has always prevented it. I was hoping to go before we move but we'll be in L.A. by the beginning of Aug. Crying GL!!!

There have been a few closures. A couple of them look like they've already been resolved (or at least they've got a temporary fix). But there's a big slide covering the road near Gorda. There's an alternate route you can take through the park, which will connect you to Hwy 101 (although it will triple the time it will take, compared to just taking Hwy 1) . The park is still open though, and you can check it out -- you just won't be able to go all the way through. So, depending on what you want to see, you may need to take a detour.

I'll be monitoring the situation, so if I see that they've opened the road back up, I'll let you know. Smile

  • Thanks Dani! I've been wanting to drive the coastal drive there since I've never done it. It may just have to wait for some time we come up to the Bay Area to visit IL.
