Anyone have any experience with either of these? The house we bought is a foreclosure and has been vacant for over a year. The grass is dead and I was wondering what the best way to go at it is. We are very handy, so we can do a lot of the work on our own. My fist instinct is to seed because of a lower cost, but I'm afraid of it not taking. Any tips or prior experience you can share?
Re: Sod or seed?
I forget where you live, but I think that probably has a big role in this decision...I would ask at local garden centers and see what they recommend.
Congrats on the house!! Do you have to do work or are you thinking you'll move right in?
We're actually planning on (finally) laying sod next week. It has been a lot of work preparing for it, but you'll have the prep issues for seeding too.
Our next door neighbors just tilled up their yard and reseeded. It's slowly coming up, but they did that over a month ago, I think at this point in the season you'll need to sod, or just wait until next year.
I'm glad we waited to lay the sod since it's been so cold around here this spring.
The girls gave some really good tips already and I just want to add that with either route, the first few years you will need to give your lawn a lot of TLC! We bought our house in '09 and our yard was so so to ok. Since we had a foundation of lawn we went with the seed route to fill it in and we've had to make sure that we are very scheduled with fertilizing, weed & feed, winterizing, etc. but it has paid off and the year is really starting to look pretty good.
GL!
Thanks ladies! The house is just outside of Denver. Our city has water restrictions, so we wont even be able to do anything until September, less for for dh all summer long! I think we are going to try the seed route first and then go from there. Really green grass is one thing that i will miss from the midwest. Its very dry here, so grass isn't so pretty.
Its actually in really good shape for being a foreclosure, the yard is defiantly the biggest issue. It just needs a good scrub down and we will be all set! It has new paint and carpet, so we got lucky!
