Coffee tastes burnt!

I purchased a high-end Mr. Coffee programmable coffee maker and every pot I've made has tasted burnt. It has the option for regular or strong brew, always on regular. Tried using less coffee grounds and more water. Coffee just comes out too clear and still tastes and smells burnt. As soon as it starts brewing, my house reeks of burnt coffee. It's not that it sits on the warming plate too long because I poor a cup immediately with pause and poor. I've cleaned it several times. I'm getting frustrated with it! It was very expensive and I have not had one decent cup of coffee come of it. Any ideas or suggestions?

Have you run a white vinegar solution through it?
    nothing
  • It could be your coffee.

If the beans have been over roasted then it will taste burnt and sometimes smell that way. But not all the time. If cleaning your coffee maker doesn't work, change coffees.

  • It could very well be that your coffee maker is making the water too hot.

I agree that you should try cleaning it by running some vinegar through it (and then two pots of plain water to clear the vinegar out).

Then, if that doesn't work, try a lighter coffee bean. Don't choose anything that says it's Bold. Get something milder.

If all else fails, I hope you kept the receipt.

I will never buy a high end coffee maker. They are all the same to me, except some have timers, and some don't.

  • I agree that it's probably the coffee you're using. The darker the roast the longer the beans have been "baked" - so try something mild or a morning blend.

Also, if you're pouring a cup from pause and pour, you may be getting the strongest first cup - it might help to let the whole pot brew and then get a cup to see if it evens out.

You could also try adding chicory or cinnamon to the grinds to smooth it out.

  • What kind of grind are you using? It could be that your grinder is due to be replaced and is "burning" the coffee, or that the grind isn't appropriate for an automatic drip coffee maker.

  • We have had that problem when not using enough coffee in the pot. Its actually better to brew it strong and then water down to taste.

I also agree that you need to let the whole pot brew first.
