Castroville Artichoke Festival - anyone been?

Has anyone been to the Artichoke Festival in Castroville?  It's this weekend and we were planning on going until I just saw that it is $10 per person to get in.  I'm not sure I'm willing to pay $20 to walk around a festival that I'm assuming is akin to an art and wine festival.

If you have been to the artichoke festival, would you go back?  Is it worth the entrance fee?

  • I've been and no, it's not worth $10. We actually drove up from Fresno a few years ago to go because artichokes are my favorite food. The majority of it is a little carnival, cheapy vendors, with a car show, live music, etc. (I think rides. I can remember.) They do have food vendors who do a lot with artichokes (I had a cupcake). And there's a room with sculptures made from artichokes (which was cool) and other artichoke related stuff. And you can take a bus tour of the fields (we didn't). Really though, I was pretty disappointed. I mean, if you're OK with a low-key thing then go for it, but it wasn't what I expected.

  • I went to years ago but don't recall having to pay to get in.  I also don't think it's worth the $10 to get in, especially if you have a long drive to get there.  The food isn't very good either.  Parking is also horrible.  I wanted to go this year, but I just convinced myself it's not worth it...lol.

  • Thanks ladies.  that's what I was afraid of - I guess we'll think of something else to do this weekend.  maybe I'll just get a bunch of artichokes and have my own little festival at home.  :-)

That sounds like a fine plan.

The one good thing that came out of that visit was I signed up for Ocean Mist Farms newsletter. If you like artichokes, they have lots of recipes and stuff.

  • I am so glad you asked about this!  DH and I were debating whether or not to go, especially because it is quite a drive and I am so glad I read this before we went.  Sounds like it is definitely not worth it.
