Weird pet odor in our new apartment...

We just got our fist apartment, its really nice, appears clean, has fresh paint on the walls and brand new hardwood floors were just installed before we moved in.  However, there is a strange pet odor in the kitchen/laundry room area.  Part of me feels like maybe the previous tenants had cats or something and cat pee seeped into the flooring and then the wood floor was installed on top of it.  I've cleaned the floors with a Swiffer at least 3 times and it still smells funky.  I've been considering buying one of those gel "odor absorbing" products but I don't know if they even work.  Anyone have any tips/advice on how to get rid of the weird smell?

  • I would definitely call the landlord and see if they could look into it.

  • The same thing happend to my friend. When we helped her move in to a new place it smelled like a littler box.  The Master bed, bath, and closet were the worst. We took hot water and a little bleach and dunk rags in it and wiped the walls and bathroom floors. Her walls are white so it was safe on her walls. We then took hot water mixed with Febreze floor cleaner and dunk rags in it and did the same. It helped a lot.
  • Depending on the size of the room, the gel odor things do work.  I agree with pp.  We did something similar with our laundry room when we moved in.  Instead of febreeze we used mr. clean and that seemed to take the smell out.  We haven't had any problems since.

  • awesome!!  thanks so much!  i'll probably try it all...  LOL
  • Hi, usually just lurk here, but I had this issue in a rental house I lived in, so I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.

When we had that issue, I tried everything, but the one that finally worked was something called Nature's Miracle.  They have it at the pet store and apparently it is made to break the enzymes that make that smell - so instead of covering it, it gets rid of it.  Only caution is that the stuff smells  a bit strong when you first use it.  I did small areas at a time and it worked out well - totally took the weird pet smell out.
