Abdominal swelling w/Paragard?

Hi ladies--hoping someone can shed some light on this weird issue I'm having...thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I just had the Paragard IUD inserted 3 days ago.  I've never been pregnant, but everything went fine--mild cramping over the past few days, but nothing that Advil couldn't handle.  Also, I've been on the pill for 9 years, but just stopped taking it 2 days ago since I switched to the IUD.  Then today I started feeling abdominal swelling--not painful at all, but serious bloating just in my abdominal area.

I wasn't expecting the abdominal swelling since it's not a commonly listed side effect according to the literature, and my doctor didn't warn about it, so I'm getting a little nervous.  Has anyone experienced this after getting the Paragard (and/or going off the Pill), and if so, did it last long?

Re: Abdominal swelling w/Paragard?

  • Get used to it. I've had paragard for 2 1/2 yrs now and have really bad lower abdominal bloating every month from about a week and a half before my period till a day after it starts. I never had this problem when I was on the pill ( I was on bcp for 15yrs).

Also, my periods are very very heavy on days 2 and 3 (also never happened when I was on the pill nor before I was on the pill). They are so heavy in fact that I go through a super plus tampon in 4 hrs. Cramps are still bad even 2 1/2 yrs later ( only the day before and the first day of my period though).

I'm getting it removed by the end of the year (dh is getting a vasectomy in the fall when we aren't as active) because A. we aren't having kids to begin with and B. I'm tired of the bleeding interfearing with our trips/activities ( my cycle isn't regular*it was before I was on BCP*) so it makes it hard to plan things (I have found, camping is NOT a good idea when I have my period lol).

good luck. I'll be interested to see if any one else who's had it for awhile has the abdominal bloating too.

  • Hmmm...good to know.  Well, not *good*, but better than my paranoia that my uterus was about to explode or something, lol.  Thanks for sharing your experience--I guess I'll keep monitoring for now and hope for the best.
  • I've had both the Mirena and Paragard IUDs and experienced abdominal swelling with both. It's something that you just get used to.

Also, I have the same experience as PP with the Paragard.

good to know I'm not the only one. I was beginning to think my body just hated me.

    you're welcome.

I didn't know about the bloating either. The first few months after I had it inserted were grea (probably because the BCP was still in my system) then all of a sudden, boom, the bloating started.

FYI, I've also started to get pimples and yeast infections(the YI have gotten better since I started taking Acidophelus*sp?* ( I never had either of those before the IUD either :(.

  • Huh?

I insert Paragards every day, yup, it's my job.

    Abd bloating?

Not normal. Yes, you will have heavier & crampier periods. But there is zero effect on your GI system. The bloating is not from your IUD.
