Water babies

Who has done a water babies class?  Would you mind sharing where?  If it's at the Y, do you have to be a member or can you just sign up and pay a higher fee?

I think I read that it's recommended to wait until the baby is at least 6 months old, correct?

We did Water Babies through the Waukee Y with Sophia.  We aren't members so it was a bit more expensive, but still wasn't bad.  I can't remember now how old she was, but she was walking so she was at least 1 before we started.

  • We do Water Babies through Urbandale pool. They have to be 6 months old to start. Ella has done it the past two summers and will do it again this summer. I haven't decided yet if we will enroll Brody as well this summer or just wait until next summer. I know for Urbandale, the sessions are two weeks long, Monday-Thursday so 8 sessions for $40.

  • We have done waterbabies at the Walnut Creek and Ankeny Y since Maddie was 6 months old.  Like PP mentioned you don't have to be a member but as a non-member it will cost a bit more.  I was NOT crazy about the class at the Ankeny Y and I LOVE the class at Walnut Creek.

Maddie loves them and it's great Maddie & Mama time!

  • Kala:  Mind me asking why weren't you crazy about lessons in Ankeny?  I coach there but when we had B in lessons we drove to Waukee.  I have watched lessons and always thought it was interesting the way they have each class in 1 lane.  It is so different from the way Waukee does it, so I was just curious how different it was from Walnut Creek.

Do you know how often they do the class?  Urbandale would be very close for us!

  • we took the class via DMPS education -- located in Des Moines at Ruby Van Meter/Smouse school.  my son was about 10 months, i don't remember an age minimum.  a lot of the class was to introduce the baby to water ... you blow bubbles at the top of the water and baby mimics.  there was one instructor and she had everyone spread out and practice or just do their own thing, and then she would come over and work with us individually, and give tips on water introduction.  i think it was around 40$ for six classes (once a week).

We also did the Water Babies at Waukee Y for a Saturday morning session - I think it was 30 minutes.  Our son was 5 months at the time.  We aren't members either and it was $35 for 4 or 5 weeks.

We did the class in Urbandale, also.  Here the schedule.  I don't know if they do it in the summer or not.  We just did the Level 2 in April.

We tried the Sat Morn classes at Ankeny and they shoved 12 tots and their parents in one lane...it was impossible to move around!  At Walnut Creek we had 1/2 the pool for 12 tots and their parents.  I SO wish that Ankeny wouldn't shove the class in one lane (so so so stupid) we are 1 block from the Y in Ankeny and would still prefer to drive to 73rd and University for a 1/2 hour class than be in 1 lane.  I heard that the classes during the day, during the week are not that way, but I work.

We did this one also when K was 6 months old.  Shea and I were in the same class.  It was good for introduction to water, but I don't think it was an actual 'learning' thing (we had had him in other pools, and gotten the same response from him, so not sure we needed to spend the $, other than the fact that the pool was super warm!!!)
