I'm all about using "clean" items but hate the price. I could do vinegar and water, but does that kill germs?? I'm a germ freak and that is why I use the heavy duty stuff....please change me.
Re: Clean + Germs?
That wasn't a siggy check. Stan was logged on to my infrequently used laptop, and I posted not realizing I was logged in as her! I had a whole reply typed out, then saw her avatar with the same links I was referencing and thought we shared a brain. I had to wait the minimum time to delete, but I was able to edit right away and didn't want people quoting something that wasn't actually written by Stan.
Anyway.
Vinegar does have antibacterial properties http://www.frugalfun.com/vinegar.html
and so do a bunch of essential oils, http://www.anandaapothecary.com/articles/antibacterial-essential-oils.html so you can add a few drops for an added punch and a nice scent.
I'm definitely not smart enough to know stuff like this and would forget to post about it if I did. I am, however, smart enough to know how to check my siggy without being a DB in someone's useful vinegar thread. But again, not smart enough to log out of my bestie's pc!
I will however send myself this link, because part of the reason I've not cleaned with vinegar, despite wanting to, is the smell!
The vinegar smell is gone as soon as it dries, which is one reason I like it- no lingering odour.
It's actually a really bad idea. You don't want to be using antibacterial stuff all the time, because it encourages the evolution of bad resistant bugs. Your body also suffers from not having all the benign bugs around.

Nothing will grow on a clean dry surface, so when cleaning you want a way to remove oils and dust, and that's all. Vinegar cuts through oil. I also use a scrubbing sponge when I'm doing the dishes to clean the kitchen counter.
Just think that the chemicals that are harmful to germs are harmful to you too.
Seriously, wash your hands after you potty, and wash your dishes after you eat, and you'll be fine. Once the food, oil, feces, and dust is removed, so are the germs.
That's it.
You don't need to kill the germs. They will go away on their own when they don't have anything to hide in or eat.
Lol. Someone accused me of siggy testing, though it was deleted. I was talking to them.
Hi! I meant to click on D&R but clicked on C&O and then perused and here i am...
We use EF cleaning methods, including vinegar. The smell doesn't linger once it's dry, and lots of people put in essential oils to leave a nice aroma. My h has a medically-suppressed immune system and cleaning with vinegar (we also use steam, baking soda and occasionally dr. bronners) has not been a problem. He stays healthy.
Viruses aren't ever alive. Harsh chemicals like bleach can disassociate their proteins so that they are not active (essentially dissolving their outer "packaging" so the insides "spill out" and cannot infect a host), but that isn't necessary in a typical home setting. Washing them away works just fine to keep one's home clean and reasonably free of germs. Using a solution of vinegar, water and dr. bronner's (which is a common solution used for cleaning household surfaces), the soap loosens grime from surfaces, as does the vinegar which also kills bacteria (it's acidic). If you want to disinfect further, consider a steam mop (many types have attachments/configurations which allow easy floor cleaning as well as other surfaces such as tiled walls, counters, etc.).
