Winos, come in!

My old roommate is getting married in August and her shower is in a few weeks. I guess her family is buying them some kind of wine bottle holding thing, so they would like everyone to bring a bottle of wine to the shower to help them fill it. I know jack squat about wine. I don't want to spend a ton since I'm buying a shower gift as well. Does anyone have any suggestions for brands/types of wine? I have no idea if she prefers reds/whites.

TIA, ladies, for your expertise! :)

Re: Winos, come in!

  • Go with a pinot noir (red) or pinot grigio (white)  Some people don't like the fuller bodied wines, and these are very light but tasty.  Is there a Trader Joe's near you?  They have an awesome wine section.  You can get really good wines for under $5.
  • Agreed on the Trader Joe's- if you have one that sells wines, their Vino Verde is astonishingly good.  It is a medium white (not too sweet nor too dry), slightly sparkling.  Also, it is $4.

My pinot grigio pick is Ecco Domani, it is $12-15 and available widely.

Kirk drinks Chardonnay and Gurwurtztraminer (sp?) if you want recs on those.

We don't really drink red wine so I'm no help there.

this.  It's a fantastic wine for a great price, I think at least.  A Spanish Albarino is also fantasic - a lot like a good Pinot Grigio - crisp and a little fruity.

As far as reds, I prefer a stronger red, like a Shiraz or a Cabernet Savignon.  One of my favorites is Penfold's Kanooga Hill (Australian), which you can also get for around $10, and it's pretty widely available.

  • I agree on the Ecco Domani... delish! My favorite Sav Blanc right now is Veramonte (it's widely available). Super crisp, fruity, and fresh - perfect for summer. For reds, I recently was given a few bottles of Layer Cake (they have merlot, cab sav, and shiraz) and it's fantastic. Full bodied but not too heavy. It's around $10-$12 a bottle and the whole "cake" them would be a cute touch for the wedding :)
  • Bella Sera is usually my go-to wine.  It typically goes for $10-$12 a bottle.

Bella Sera Pinot Noir 2009 is pretty much the only red wine I will drink.

Then I always pick up a bottle of their Pinot Grigio as well.

  • if you dont have trader joes, the barefoot and yellowtail brands arent too bad. i like the barefoot chardonnay.

also, if you think that a lot of people are going to get them dinner wines and you want to get them something different. i suggest a moscato. its light, sweet (but not too sweet) and fruity. its more of a dessert wine than a "with dinner" wine.

One other question -- if I buy wine at the grocery store vs a wine shop, is the wine different, or is it all the same stuff?

I'll definitely hit up trader joe's and see what they have -- I have a hankering for some of their snacks anyway. :) Thanks for the suggestions!

    I agree with this. I'm a huge fan of Barefoot's Moscato, and it's like, $6 I think?

If you go with a less expensive wine, you could get a red and a white, since you don't know their preference.

I had the barefoot Moscato for the first time a few weeks ago - It was seriously like I was swallowing heaven.

I usually go for Barefoot (then Yellowtail) if I don't get Bella Sera.

THIS!!!!  Although I've been having a hard time finding it for the past year!  I also like Hob Nob Pinot Noir.  For a little variety try a Portuguese Vinho Verde. Seems to be the trend for the summer. Sort of like a Pinot Grigio, but with a bit of effervescence to it.

  • If you need any more ideas:

A good, mildly sweet white is Marques Caceras Rioja Satinela.  It's similar to a semi-sweet Riesling.  And a good drier Riesling is Blue Moon Oregon Riesling -- almost everyone I know has enjoyed that one even if they're not fans of Riesling.

7 Deadly Zins is one of my favorite reds, because it's not too heavy and has a nice, interesting finish. I loooove Zinfandel.

YES!  Love this one also.  It's my favorite to cook with, I think the flavor it brings to pasta and whatnot is pretty amazing.  And I like drinking the rest of the bottle with dinner :)

Ooh, I never thought of cooking with it--I like to drink it too much!  What kinds of recipes have you used it in?   Maybe I should try throwing it in my turkey stroganoff recipe?  (I usually use cheap chardonnay for that.)

Baby C needs to hurry up and be born, I am dying for a big, chilled glass of Satinela on the deck soon.

Any recipe that calls for white wine - risotto, pasta, a lighter bolognase, caramelized onions... I cook with wine a lot.  Some times it ends up in the food :)

Sometimes I'll just use a Pinot Grigio, if that's all I have on hand, but I love cooking with a white Rioja.

Thanks for the info, ladies! I went to Trader Joe's and got some Vino Verde. I may try it with DH first since it was so cheap. The guy at Trader Joe's said it's a great summer wine. I'm definitely bookmarking the other suggestions as well -- DH and I have only ever tried like one kind of wine, ever.

  • I also love Barefoot Moscato.  Delicious.  They have champagne as well.  I have been drinking Green Truck organic wines because they cause less migraines.  They are around $10 and can be found at TJ's.

A cute idea might be one of the cupcake wines.
