I'm always too nervous to order my sushi from the bar. I don't know what to say, how to order, etc.
My sis thinks I should try it. Especially since I've dabbled around in cooking Japanese food, and know more than the average American.
Any pros with advice?

Are you looking to try the sashimi (raw fish) or sushi rolls?
I love sashimi, almost all types except for eel, squid, mackerel, tuna belly. I like rolls but I'm picky since I'm not a fan or roe or avocado and don't really care for the tempura battered kind.

Ok, I'm realizing I wasn't clear.
Ordering from the chef vs. ordering off menu is what I was talking about.
I like all forms of sushi, sashimi, maki, etc. I will eat almost anything.
DO IT. the chefs at the bar like making food for people who will appreciate it. Just strike up a conversation and say "i'll start with salmon sashimi" or whatever and then say "and I'm in the mood for something spicy/light/sweet/etc...what do you recommend?"
