Monday Moans

I wish it were the weekend so I can go to STL with my girlfriends. I wish I didn't have to work the next few days (even though we could use the money, and once school gets out for summer, my work goes bye-bye.) I *almost* wish I wasn't done with grad school so I would have something to keep me busy this summer.

Re: Monday Moans

  • I hate that I have shin splints right now. I went really easy last week and only did 2 classes and no running last week. I ran for the first time yesterday since the 5k and it hurt the second I started running. I stuck it out for 15 minutes but still....annoying! I ordered a compression sleeve and hoping that helps a little (I've been icing since last week) and I have an appointment with the PT place inside my gym. I'm hoping they can check to make sure that I'm in the right shoes....maybe that's all I need!

I hope that DH and I can find a nice apartment that is affordable. Easier said than done.

It's going to rain for the next 5 days....awesome. I sure hope summer is better than spring - because this spring has been awful.

  • I hate that even with all this rain my allergies have gone back to being insane where I can't breathe through my nose, etc. And this damned Claratin just doesn't work as well for me.

I had what I thought were shin splints for a bit.  I pushed through them, and tried one girls suggestion, and leaned forward as much as I could, when I was running. They went away, I'm not sure if that was the reason.

Now my problem is my knees.  They were in so much pain Sunday after I ran 7 miles.  I usually soak in a hot bath with Epsom salts, I was thinking of buying ice packs and alternating between the hot bath and ice.

I love running, but sometimes I wonder if I'm crazy for putting my body through this torture.

  • I heard taking garlic supplements daily help with allergies.

I can't take them while pregnant, but thanks for the suggestion. Next spring I'll be back on my regular allergy meds and athsma medications, so small price to pay this spring for a healthy baby!

what about allegra??  Claritin is worthless for me...
  • So, I'm late on this, but I HATE THIS WEATHER.  Ugh.  It has been an awful spring.  We have had like 3 nice days, a ton of wind, rain and cold.  We got FROST this morning.  It's the middle of May!  What gives??

Next, my drive to work is also terrible.  I live in Illinois, but work in Iowa.  I have to cross this bridge everyday.  Well, it's down to one lane and under construction until September.  Then, they will switch sides and make the IL bound under construction starting September til probably November.  The traffic is literally backed up for miles and makes the drive about 4 times longer than usual and gas is already $4 a gallon here.  I am going to freak out.    I feel like hyper-ventilating just thinking about it.  Not good for a pregnant lady :(

Allergies. Again.   I should just take Allegra daily starting mid April until October,   but if I don't have symptoms I don't think about it.  And my symptoms are not the usual sneezing & congestion... I just get really tired and get headaches (with the occasional sneeze!)

I didn't take anything yesterday, and was miserable this morning.

Other than that-  just can't wait for the weekend!

Can't take allerga because of it's drug class, and it's never worked for me anyway. Claratin is a class A drug and thus is very safe to use during pregnancy. Typically I take Zyrtec, which is a class B or C and that means they are not sure that it has any effects on pregnant women (i.e. labs tests are inconclusive). I'd rather have minor relief and not hurt my baby for certain than have better relief and possibly hurt my baby. I'm just more frustrated that with all this rain I'm not feeling better than I have for the last few rain-less weeks.

I was curious b/c I love Allegra- so I looked it up quickly.

Class C means research on pregnant animals (prob. rats or mice) show lower birthweight/mortality/ adverse effects at 3x the recommended daily dose and no tests have been done in humans.  Specifically with allegra, the one study I found showed a decrease in birthweight (at a 3x recommended daily dose).

Class B means research on pregnant animals (prob. rats or mice) show lower birthweight/mortality/adverse effects at 3x the recommended daily dose, and human studies have not shown any adverse effects.

Class A- free & clear, no bad results with either humans or animals.

BTW- Class D-  both human & animal studies show bad results. But the benefit of being on the meds outweighs the possible negative side effects.

Class X-  should not be taken at all.

  • Interesting about Allegra. Like I said, that never came up because Allegra has only ever worked for a few days before it was rendered completely useless in my body. My mom is a pharmacy tech so I was just using the "easy" explanation she used for me, but thanks for sharing the classes of drugs. With all the other "fun" health things I get to worry about because I'm me, I'd just rather opt for the completely free and clear and suffer a little rather than worry about what I'm putting into my body on top of all this other fun crap I get to go through this month (though honestly until this week or so the Claratin has been working fairly well overall). Thanks for trying to help :)

No problem- I was just curious for the "future" (next spring!).   Claritin really doesn't do anything for me at all, and Zyrtec knocks me out completely (like head on desk within an hour of taking it).

  • Yeah I know what you mean. I knew from Day 1 I would have to switch allergy meds, but I was surprised when my OBs wouldn't allow me asthma meds to help me breathe easier. Just try to (if you can!) make sure you're at least in 2nd tri by spring - most OBs will let you take sudafed or benadryl by then, but you aren't allowed to have those in first tri b/c of how adversely they can hurt baby's development. Good luck!
