Do You Sew?

I put this on the craft board too.

If you sew, what does your sewing maching sit on?  I am redoing my "studio" and don't have a proper sewing table.  They are wicked expensive, but I see the benefit of them.  Sewing is not my best and/or favorite craft, so I am having a hard time justifing spending $250 on a proper sewing desk.  DH says go for it......  Thoughts?

Re: Do You Sew?

  • I saw your post on Crafts and didn't respond because I have no advice about the antique sewing tables.

I agree about not spending the $ on single use furniture, if you have a desk or a table that suits your space now I wouldn't worry about specialized furniture.  However, if you're looking for a new piece and want to get something, I'd recommend getting something you like but won't be terribly upset about if it gets scratched, etc.

I sew at my kitchen table or in my living room on a slightly higher than normal end table (plenty of room for my large quilts to run off the sides).   Having a dedicated space would be nice, but we don't have the room in Old Town, so I make due.

  • My grandmother's sewing table was basically a large desk.  It had drawers on either side and was pretty awesome.  My grandfather built another table that connected to the back of it - so she had basically a HUGE sewing table, it was awesome... but it also took up 1/2 of her basement.

I sew on the dining room table, and my mom pulls out a folding table (one of the long rectangular ones).  But yeah, it would be nice to have a dedicated place for my sewing machine so I didn't have to lug it up from the basement every time I want to use it (and I think if it did have a permanent spot, i'd use it more).

  • Mine is in a sewing cabinet that is currently being used as a bed side table in the guest room, so I'm clearly of no help!  My SIL (who made my wedding dress) has a simple round table that she found with leafs that drop off.  That way she can make it as big as she needs or little and can easily slide it out of the way.  It's not a fancy table, but quite functional.
  • I don't sew, so I don't have any thoughts for you, BUT....I couldn't help but zero in on your use of "wicked" and was wondering where you're from?  I just moved to DC last summer after living in Mass all my life...and whenever I use that word around here I get the weirdest looks!  It's very rare that hear someone else use it haha.

That and the term "bubbler" for water fountain.  Sorry, but a "water fountain" to me is pretty statue that spits out a steady stream of water Wink

  • I have mine on a desk in the basement.  In the past I have sewn on our dining room table, a sewing cabinet that the machine pops up out of, and an IKEA table.  I would only recommend that you get/use something that is STURDY.  I love the desk I use now because it is steel and doesn't move at all when my machine is running at full speed.  The IKEA table I had sucked because my machine would bounce/vibrate on the table.  And the IKEA table was not cheap!

  • I sew on an Ikea table that sits in our guest bedroom. It's a basic parsons table style, but it works for now.

  • Currently mine sits on a mini dresser type thing (ikea) that I use to store crafts items as well.  Other thoughts:  a random table you may have.  Or buy a door at Lowes/Home Depot and sit it on two filing cabinets or whatever and you can have a large area for crafting.

  • I have a small foldup table from Bed Bath and Beyond, I could not find a pic or link on the site tho.
