training for a half marathon...?
I'm thinking about it. I really don't know where to start though. I run at least 3 times each week. I either do a 5K (Always trying to do it under 30mins...never make it but I come close!) or one hour runs. I only run on a treadmill, but on an incline of 1.5
I'm the type of person that really needs a schedule to follow

Re: training for a half marathon...?
I actually just found the Hal Higdon site and was wondering how it is! Congrats on your first half marathon!
I started running in Jan 2010, when dh and I started the couch to 5k program, then moved onto the 10K program. So, I know I can do it...but I do better with a program since I am a stickler for rules!
I will definitely see if there is a running group in my area. I would feel safer running with someone anyhow...I'm sure DH would too.
oh, also did you continue training while pregnant? I had to take 6 weeks off for a IVF cycle and it really put me back. With this cycle, my dr is having me stop running this friday. If the cycle is successful, I won't be able to workout again until mid june. She said (I would confirm this) that I would be able to workout again...just wondering about training as long as I'm not pushing too hard?
thank you!

There are many women who run when pregnant. I would listen to your doctor first though.. as much as it sucks.
My doctor said that if I was a runner before, then there is no reason I can't be a runner when pregnant. You just dont want to start something new. So while in my non-doctor opinion, you can still run.. I"m not sure I would start to train for a half when pregnant.
I'd discuss all with your doctor and then if he says no, then ask him to explain why. If you arent satisfied with the answer, get a second opinion.

Thanks
I actually started my training last May, and did my 1st half in October, 2nd in November. I had a great time, and am so glad I did them. I definitley think it's a great goal to have!
I did a few races and long runs while early in my pregnancy (my longest run was 9 miles at about 6 weeks and I did a 10K and a marathon relay), but then we took a 10 day vacation around my 7th week and the break from running combined with the exhaustion I felt made it tough to get back into it. I ran a little after that but felt so drained physically and it stopped being fun for me anymore. My doctor just recommended I keep my heart rate at or below 160. I think training and running a half at that HR is doable, but I also think that it could be pretty taxing on your body to increase your mileage the way you have to to 1/2 marathon train at the same time that your body is being taxed by the extra requirements pregnancy puts on it...especially for your first half and first pregnancy. Really just up to you and your doctor and your mutual comfort levels with it.
Wishing you TONS of luck with your next IVF though
I trained for the San Jose RnR 1/2 that was in October. I did not follow the HH training but it was close to it. Last year was all about long distance. I did a 9 miler in April, 10K in July (wharf to wharf) and then the 1/2 in October. This year, I have burnt out in running but I am still doing short distances.
I would definitely do the HH training and try to incorporate some races into your training to keep it fun.
Good luck with the training and the IVF as I may be in that same boat in the near future (the IVF part)
I'm crossing my fingers for you!!
