Snack Ideas

This is a follow up on the bkfst question from the morning, bc i thought it was a great question for me to steal ideas (I'm a pediatric dietitian). What are some good snack ideas I could use in my clinic?? I am always looking for interesting healthy carb/healthy protein combos to suggest, any that your kids really like?

Re: Snack Ideas

  • Hopefully these are healthy - Jake is SUCH a picky eater...

-banana or apple slices w/ PB (we call slices "moons" because they look like crescents)

-pretzels sticks,Goldfish or crackers & string cheese (Goldfish come in a "Garden Veggie" variety that has a small serving of veggies as a bonus)

    -yogurt smoothie

-apple or pear slices & cheese

-"trail mix" w/ Cheerios, raisins, pretzels, and sometimes a couple chocolate chips

  • Caroline loves string mozzarella cheese, plain yogurt ( or I'll add blueberries, peaches etc- cuts down on sugars from pre-made), Annies Cheddar bunnies, triscuts, Graham crackers with cream cheese, mozzarella grilled cheese, any kind of fruit or veggie she'll eat, and I make oatmeal cookies with some wheat germ for fiber. Feel like we could add some more variety in there too...

If Jake eats all that, I wouldn't say he's THAT picky.

Out of your list, Helen would eat the pretzel sticks, cheddar cheese Goldfish, and string cheese (we call it round cheese), but not together.  And the chocolate chips, of course, because those aren't very healthy.

  • Great ideas, thanks ladies! many of my parents are looking for snack ideas and it's hard to stay away from the 100cal pack type of snacks, especially for the school age kids. Thanks for helping me with my job :-)

Have a great hump day!! I hear there might be sun this weekend?? (i'm trying to stay optimistic, although it's starting to get hard)

  • Some other ideas:

-Gogurt (you can get the simply gogurt that doesn't have added colors)

-squeezable fruit pouches (applesauce or other flavors)

-fruit leather (the 100% fruit kind, not fruit rollups)

    -mini boxes of raisins

Helen will sometimes eat the raisins and the gogurt.  I eat the fruit leather and "squeezy fruit."  :)

  • I have no idea if these are kid friendly or not, but here are some of my go-to snacks (back when I could eat normally and not feel nauseous or gross after eating all the time that is!)

Plain rice cake or slice of whole what bread with Nutella

Plain or Chcolate Rice cake with Natural Peanut Butter

veggies (carrots, cucumber, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes) in Greek yogurt Dip ( I don't care for Greek Yogurt, but I actually like some of the GY dips I've tried that they have at Hannaford)

    Apples with Natural PB

    Yogurt

    Fruit

    Smoothies

    Hard Boiled Egg

    Cheese and crackers

I usually try and make some healthy snacks on the weekends that I can have during the week. Some of my recent faves are whole wheat Banana or Blue Berry Muffins, homemade LARA bars, homemade granola bars.

I know chocolate milk isn't super healthy and there is some debate over it right now, but I personally can't drink regular milk. I think it gross. I love chocolate Ovaltine though. I know it still has some sugar, but I figure it's somewhat better than chocolate syrup or something similar becaue of the added vitamins and whatnot. It's really filling with a muffin too.

Bowl of Kashi cereal with fruit (this has been one of my go-to snacks right now. One of the few things I can stomach on a regular basis that's relatively healthy!)
