Foreclosure next door

Just a story...kinda long.

So, the house next door to us went into foreclosure at some point and the people moved out at the beginning of this month.  Well the side garage door was wide open, so DH shut it.  A few days later it was open again, so I moseyed inside.  The garage was full of garbage and the door to inside the house was open...so I moseyed inside there as well.  No big deal, some crap left behind, whatever.

Well, I was on travel for 2 weeks and during that time DH said the door was repeatedly left open, so he continued to shut it.  He also cut the front lawn because it was really getting long.  (The backyard is already a jungle).  This past Sunday, I was outside taking pics of our yard and we noticed the door was open...again.  So once again, I went inside to check it out.  I went all the way into the house this time and oh sweet lord!

Now, when we were looking for houses we saw some foreclosures and the angry owners left behind giant holes in walls, missing cabinets, etc.  The house next to us though?  Graffiti and spray paint on everything!  Swear words, ridiculous "art", latex paint thrown all over the carpet, a giant wall of mirrors shattered all over the floor, some weird goo on the floor in the kitchen, the works!  Just unbelievable.  And since I had my camera in hand, I snapped a few pics.  I'm pretty sure it was the two teenagers that lived there and the 5 teenage hooligans that live across the street.

We've debated calling the cops, but I don't know.  If they show up, I'm pretty sure the kids across the street would know it was us and we don't want them doing anything to our house.  I've since found out who owns it and will probably call them and the township to see what is going to be done about the grass cutting.  I don't want to live next door to a wild animal infested, overgrown, hot mess of a house for the next couple of years.

And seriously, if I saw all that graffiti, it would turn me off to the neighborhood thinking it's just a bunch of nasty people that live around there.  And really, it's not a bad neighborhood at all.

Just wanted to share.

Re: Foreclosure next door

  • I don't understand why people do that to for foreclosures. It makes no sense to me.

  • WOW! That is super Klassy!

Definitely call about the grass. My dad owns a lawn maintenance company (yes, he is one of those annoying people who kill the earth) and he has a couple accounts where the township, neighborhood association, or bank will call and have him cut the lawn so it isn't such an eyesore.

The house next to us is a foreclosure and they have a company come out once a week or so to maintain the lawn.

  • When our house was unoccupied and up for short sale, the a-hole realtors would come thru and leave our doors open!  My husband had to go there every day to make sure they closed things up.  It was ridiculous and we reported them all the time.  And then people know that the house is unoccupied so vandals end up coming in and messing things up.... so it isn't always the people who owned the house previously (in this case it sounds like it may have been...)

I'm pretty sure it's at least the one kid that lived there since he spray-painted his name on the wall.

    He was framed! lol

I don't get why people do this.  They are so angry that they are getting their house taken after not paying for it?  They do it because they can and they are just aholes?  It happens way too much.

  • People are insane. We saw a lot of missing fixtures, cabinets, door handles when we were house hunting and went into foreclosures. It's so sad. The one house they ripped all the cabinets off the wall and just left them on the floor thrown around. So sad, some nice neighborhoods with same crazy stuff.
  • There was a lady in our neighborhood who totally trashed her little house, including throwing something through the big picture window in the front as she was leaving.
I understand that has to be an emotional processes and sometimes there are things beyond your control, however, i think it is very sad and completely rude to do that to your neighbors. Not only do they have to look at that but it brings their property value down. How do people not see the correlation and negative spiral that is causing?!

Ditto this with us too and/or giving out the lock box code to randoms and having them trot on through without a realtor and me catching them.  Ahh, the memories.

The bank SHOULD have gone over there right after possesion was taken, locks changed, etc.  I would report the grass not being cut to the city.  They should be ticketed and I know most cities contract out lawn companies to cut lawns like Jess was saying.  The city would then contact the owner about the state of the property.

There is no reason you guys should be doing that.  It is nice of you, but the bank should be taking care of that.

Yeah, we haven't seen anyone over there...and obviously the locks weren't changed or the doors secured.

  • Wowza - that's just terrible. Hopefully whatever real estate co. ends up selling the house will get it cleaned up prior to listing.

We saw some sad/icky things that people did to foreclosures when house hunting, but never anything that bad.

The worst part is, I think some people feel they are 'getting back' at the bank who took their home because now they have to deal with the mess, but really, it's just punishing the neighbors.

  • We have a foreclosure next door to us too. The neighbors sold everything they could remove. The sad part is, the couple had a dog and let him go to the bathroom inside. Yes inside. The house smells awful. The other neighbor saw my DH & I cleaning up the front and back yard (the owner never kept it up and we share the front lawn) and he found out the house was unlocked. After being inside for about 5 min, I had to go outside to get some fresh air. We left a couple of windows open to air the house out (only the back windows since no one can see except us). There was a lock box on the side door and the person who put it there, never checked the house to make sure it was locked.

At least the house is being shown and the realtors actually close up the house before they leave.

I would love to get ahold of the mortgage company (the mortgage is through Wells Fargo) but I have a feeling that when we contact them about the yard, it will fall on deaf ears.

Oh yeah. Guess how much a 4 bd, 2 ba, 1600 sq ft house in foreclosure is going for in Redford?  $45,000.

  • Right after we moved into our house the one next door went into foreclosure and several times the previous owners came back and broke in.

In the end I found out from the guy that flipped the house that they stripped it clean. I am still mad at myself for not calling the police on them because I knew they had been foreclosed on when they kept coming back late at night, but I was nervous about what they might do back.

  • Two summers ago the house next door to us was vacant due to forclosure.  I live in Redford so the houses are SUPER close together.  We had our bedroom windows open and at 2 AM I woke up to some rattling noise right outside our window.  I peeked out our blinds to see some guy on a ladder breaking into hte house next door.  I mean I could have reached out and touched him!

Well, I was panicked and I called 911 and the guy must have heard me doing it because he was gone by the time the cops got there.  He had to have known we were there before he started the process becuase our tv was on and I don't know how he wouldn't have heard it.  Weirdos.
