Man Still Receiving Food Stamps After Winning 2 Million in Lottery
WJBK) - A mid-Michigan man who won $2 million on a Michigan lottery show is stilling receiving food stamps.
Leroy Fick of Bay County tells WNEM-TV he still uses his bridge card at stores despite winning a jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" last June. "I even called them and asked about the bridge card and (the Department of Human Services) said you can go ahead and keep it if you want to," said Fick.
According to Fick, he paid more than half of his winnings in taxes, leaving him about $850,000.
State Department of Human Services spokeswoman Gisgie Gendreau says under federal guidelines, if a person receives a lump-sum payment, the winnings are not counted as income.
FOX 2's Amy Lange reported in February that Bridge Card assistance is based on income, how many people are in their household and other criteria. Funds are made available on the card, which like a debit card, is swiped through electronic reader when buying groceries.
Nearly 1.9 million Michigan residents are enrolled in the program. More than 805,000 are children, according to the Detroit Free Press.
In 2009, the Office of Inspector General investigated more than 2,600 food assistance complaints , finding more than $5-million in fraud.
I'm sorry - but if I won the lottery and was on food stamps only to be told I could keep using it if I wanted - I wouldn't use it. I obviously have the money to feed my family now - let's not continue to squeeze every penny out of the system that we can. Some people amaze me.

I heard about this on the radio this morning, they had clips of a TV interview with him and the reporter asked "don't you feel like this is morally wrong? His response was "no, I don't see a problem with it, the government took half of my money"

I hate stories like this - it pisses me off that dumbasss a-holes like him keep sucking up resources that could be going to legitimately needy people. Or all the money that could be going to other things - like education instead of supporting jackholes like him.
It's really a shining example of how self-absorbed and idiotic so much of our society is that the guy thinks - oh I can keep using it, well I guess I will even though I don't need to. Shows such a complete lack of personal responsibility or morals. And doesn't he realize that HE is a taxpayer too? It's not a magical money fairy making that card work.
And how can he complain that "the government took my money" and yet is ON government assistance. Hey genius - you're getting that money back every time you swipe your bridge card.
