Childcare in the Toledo area

Hi ladies!  My DH and I are expecting our first child at the end of September and we've started looking into our childcare options for Nov/Dec when I go back to work.  We're leaning towards a small private daycare at someone's house at this point.  The problem is that I have no idea how to get recommendations.  My DH has asked around at work, but most of the attorneys at his firm have stay at home wives.  I've asked a few of my friends with kids, but none of their sitters have room for anymore kids.  I have one friend who is thinking about getting into it, but she's planning to charge more than most daycare centers I've called.  Do any of you have any recommendations for someone who runs an in-home daycare?  We are in Sylvania and would prefer something in that area.  This whole process is really stressful since it's such a big decision, so any help is much-appreciated!

Re: Childcare in the Toledo area

  • I know, when I was switching DC providers, someone on here mentioned something about a program that you can contact and get information of people who have daycares in their homes. Hopefully that person will comment on here. DS' first DCP was a friend who ended up not working out at all. His second and current DCP is amazing and I actually found her on craigslist. I was totally against looking on craigslist for a sitter becuase of all the crazy things you here(not about childcare persay but about everything) but when I finally broke down and looked, there were a lot of potential people on there. I contacted her via email, and then phone, and once DS and I met her, it was great. She has been wonderful. You can also check out sites like sittercity and care.net or something like that, but I have found that the people on those sites want paid as if they are a nanny(ie very expensive). Good Luck!!

  • I used craigslist for my sitter too.  She's wonderful!  Our first one was also a family friend and it wasn't the ideal situation (too far of a drive and she would take the kids out to run her errands)

We LOVE our current one!  Don't rule out craigslist...it doesn't hurt to look!

  • Thanks ladies...maybe I will check out craigs list.  The thought of that originally kind of scared me, but it seems like you both had success with it.

  • I know this isn't in home care, but it's something you can look at.

I'm pretty sure Jill knows of someone in the Sylvania Area, maybe she can point you in her direction.

  • The lady I know isn't taking anymore kids right now.

But my cousin found a sitter on either care.com or sittercity.com, can't remember which but she has been really happy.  The girl actually comes to her home.  I know both those sites charge a fee for you to join to be able to contact a sitter that you are interested in, but as soon as you find someone you can cancel.  It might be worth the $20 or $30 charge to join if you are having trouble.

My neighbor also found a sitter to come to her home as well, she pays her about $25 a day.  She found her through another friend.

If you end up going with a center I would recommend Maria Child Care, run by the Sisters of Notre Dame, I've heard nothing but rave reviews about it.

  • I'm urber late on this:

You need a log in to search but it's free.  You can search in home care providers and also see what kind of certification they have.  Are they a type A?   Do they meet the requirements by the state for say...a step up to quality center? And the differences between those types of care givers and others.  NONE are endorsed fyi, but it is a online database for people who are registered in the area.

If you've got questions feel free to page me and I can try to answer them.  :)

(At work I have an early learning department and we do a TON of professional development with in home caregivers.  I would say 99% of them are all on the YWCA referral network.  Remember they are not just babysitters, they are the first step in your child's development.)
