Wedding gift to "destination" wedding

I'm going to a wedding next weekend in New Orleans, so I'm calling it a destination wedding. =)  Is the rule of thumb to bring a gift that covers the cost of dinner, plus some?  I have no idea how to guess how much to spend!

Re: Wedding gift to "destination" wedding

  • are they registered? If they are I would just do the traditional thing and get something off it.

If you are thinking cash- I think you give what you can if you can cover dinner plus more- thats great!

  • I had a destination wedding myself and everyone just gave me checks, a few put cash inthe envelopes which were nice so we could take on our honeymoon with us, wh ich were leaving right from the destination wedding on to Mexico.

I would say everyone was extremely generous in their gift giving especially having to spend $ on airfare and hotels for 4 days...

  • Well are they from that area .....New Orleans....LA? Because if you as an invited guest has to travel to them. It's not a destination wedding. A destination wedding is when the couple chooses to have a wedding far from where they live, another state, country etc where everyone has to travel to attend.

Just get something off the registry. There are not rules of paying for the plate because you have no idea how much they spent. My friend in TX is getting married in Oct and her PP is about $50 a head! Mad cheap! But I would assume it was about $100-$125 since that is what it is in NY. Also you don't control how much people choose to spend on the per plate so it's not your responsibilty to pay for your plate. That's my opinion as unpopular as it may be.

Buy your gift in what you can afford and in relation to how close you are to the couple.
